Ex-Yankees Star Reveals How Clubhouse Really Feels About Aaron Boone Amid Firing Calls

5 min read

It’s a tough time to be a Yankees fan. The once-dominant Bronx Bombers have hit a staggering low, dropping 11 of their last 20 games and sliding down to second place in the AL East. Offensively, the numbers are grim as they’ve scored just 7 runs or fewer and struck out over 60 times in a 7-game stretch, a first in American League history.

Defensively, it’s no better. Shortstop Anthony Volpe, once a beacon of hope, now leads the majors with 12 errors, casting a shadow over the infield. So, as expected, the heat has turned to manager Aaron Boone. With every loss, calls for his dismissal grow louder from both fans and media alike. Yet amid the chaos and rising discontent, a surprising voice has emerged. One that refuses to join the chorus.

A former Yankee has stepped up, offering insight from inside the clubhouse and revealing what the team really thinks about the storm surrounding Aaron Boone. It’s Cameron Maybin who played for the Bombers in 2019.

Speaking on Foul Territory, Maybin said, “The problem is that fandom that comes into play, and I love Boonie’s answer. I’m the biggest boonie advocate because I played for the man. Fans can say whatever they want. They want to fire Boone; they want this and that. The Players in the clubhouse love Aaron Boone… You can say what you want: ‘They are not the Yankees of old, they haven’t won it so long.’ It doesn’t matter…”

Continuing further, he added, “Watching this, let me know I need to be careful about going back and forth with fans in the future. Because there are just some things that fans will never understand. And again, Jomboy Media has done an excellent job. This is just a great example of fans not truly understanding what players, managers, and people in the trenches have to go through.”

Well, calls to fire Boone have grown in recent weeks, as the Yankees continue to slide in the standings. But inside the clubhouse, the mood is vastly different. While fans and media question Boone’s future, the players remain firmly in his corner, and because of that unwavering support, the outside noise isn’t shaking the foundation of the Yankees clubhouse.

One of the reasons why Boone hasn’t lost the clubhouse is because he is a players’ manager — someone who knows when to push, when to protect, and when to simply listen. And that bond matters far more to the players than any headline or postgame outrage. Recall Boone’s ejections this season. Each one has come while defending his players.

But just the belief in the clubhouse won’t be enough to quieten the critics; the results will have to improve.

Boone’s recent outburst shows what the future looks like for Yankees

Boone recently appeared on Jomboy’s Talkin’ Yanks podcast and wasn’t particularly thrilled with some of the questions coming his way. When faced with questions about the team’s performance, specifically their record against division rivals, Boone was of the view that the hosts were “cherry-picking answers” and being overly critical. In a tense exchange, Boone stated his players were not “robots,” after which Jomboy responded, saying he wanted more “non-robotic” answers. Boone shot back, stating, “I don’t care what you want,” before further adding, “I want our guys in a good, like, boom. We are locked in when it’s s–tty and when it’s really good, and all in between. I want us locked. I want us to show up every day ready to prepare and ready to go.”

So, what lies ahead for the Yankees?

Boone was confident about getting the Yankees out of the slump, and that too without stressing his players to the core. Well, he did it once in September 2020, when after a 5-15 stretch, the Yankees exploded for a 10-game winning streak that time.

Calls for Boone’s firing were also there in 2024, but the Yanks ended up as runners-up in the World Series. Yes, being in New York is all about winning the rings and nothing less. But if Maybin’s words are anything to go by, Boone might be the best man for the Yankees, at least for now, even though the fans are upset.

The Bombers are still in the second place in the division, 4 wins behind the table topper, Blue Jays. But it might still be early to hit the panic button. Next for the Yanks are the Red Sox, and Boone couldn’t have asked for a better chance to turn the tables. What’s your prediction for that series?
