When a fan posted a clip of LSU’s latest game against the Florida Gators, something was clearly off. Kim Mulkey, the fiery, animated, and ever-expressive head coach, was unusually quiet. She wasn’t pacing the sidelines, barking instructions, or throwing her signature blazer in frustration. Instead, she sat, subdued, on the bench. For a coach known for her relentless energy, this was as jarring as watching a star player pass up an open shot at the buzzer. It wasn’t until a recent ESPN broadcast broke the story that people finally understood why.
According to a post on X by Cory Diaz, “According to the broadcast, Kim Mulkey has had an unexpected death in the family and that she’s been away from the team.” The revelation put her uncharacteristic behavior into perspective.
Despite Mulkey’s absence, LSU was in complete control of the game, leading Florida 37-24 with four minutes left in the second quarter. However, the bigger story was the personal loss that had kept their head coach away in the crucial lead-up to the SEC tournament.

As LSU prepared for the SEC Tournament, it did so largely without Mulkey’s presence. ESPN’s Carolyn Peck reported that Mulkey had been away from the team all week, grieving with her family. Though she arrived in Greenville on Friday, she chose to take a backseat role, sitting farther down from the scorer’s table while associate head coach Bob Starkey assumed head coaching duties.
“Kim Mulkey got to Greenville today,” Peck said during the SEC Network broadcast. “On Monday, she got the news of an unexpected death in her family. She has been away, taking care of her family. She told me that she’s going to be on the bench, but she’s probably not going to be the Kim Mulkey that we’re used to seeing because she’s still dealing with that.”
