Unpredictable might be the best word to describe the 2025 NWSL season. We’re only at Matchday 7, and there’s already a fierce battle brewing for the top spot. Although Kansas City Current had been comfortably holding first place, they finally suffered a setback with a narrow away defeat to Seattle Reign. But that wasn’t the real headline of the match—the spotlight truly belongs to star player Lynn Biyendolo, who netted her first goal not just of the season, but for the Reign since signing earlier this year. Yet, that’s only part of the goal’s significance. For Biyendolo, it served as a powerful “reminder” to the Current.
Well, consider it one of the classics of the beautiful game, where a player finally seeks vengeance against his/her very own former suitors. Well, it’s not like Biyendolo holds a grudge against KC Current, but from the looks of it, she does. Too subjective eh? Well, hear out yourself how she felt after scoring the only goal to light up the entire Lumen Field. “It was exciting,” Lynn began while speaking on the latest episode of The Women’s Game podcast. “Last year, a lot of things happened.”
Come to think of it, last year was indeed quite chewy for Biyendolo. Almost being left out of Emma Hayes’ Paris Olympics roster, the brighter side did see her win gold. However, after that, nagging injuries marred a wee bit of her time at NJ/NY Gotham. More challenges came after she announced her call to part ways with the Bats. Though hopes were high for the 2025 season, a good start to the pre-season post-Seattle switch again saw her sustaining a sprain on her knee.
So it is only natural for Biyendolo to be on cloud nine after scoring for a team that has truly accepted her. “[Seattle Reign] has honestly welcomed me with open arms and just allowed me to be Lynn I was,” she said, before dropping a huge bomb on her former suitors. “On top of that, to be able to score against Kansas City. One, they’re the league leaders but also, they traded me. Anytime you can get a little bit of reminder that ‘Yeah… you traded me and now you lost too…ha’”
Shots fired! Looks like someone finally has a sigh of relief after scoring not only a goal that was crucial for their team but also one that fulfilled a sweet revenge. Speaking of how Biyendolo managed to score, a deep corner from Lauren Barnes saw Jordyn Huitema head the ball inside the six-yard box. While Lynn’s first attempt from her left foot was blocked by the Current striker Beatriz Zaneratto João, a second try from the outside of her right did the trick.
“Bada-bing-bada-boom, it was in the goal,” narrated the former Williams, leaving the rival goalie with no chance whatsoever to save her effort. Then again, it wasn’t just seeking revenge that Biyendolo managed to pull!
Lynn Biyendolo unlocked a unique feat with a goal vs KC Current
Had Seattle Reign managed to score more then it surely would have been a cherry-on-top win for Lynn Biyendolo. But given her solo goal was enough to pull the job, she ended up achieving a unique feat that OptaJack shared on X. Well, as surprising as it may sound, the 31-year-old has now recorded the decisive goal in seven separate 1-0 victories during her NWSL career. With this achievement, Biyendolo has matched Amy Rodriguez for the most such game-winners in regular-season history.
Though it may not be the flashiest milestone, it certainly highlights how clutch Lynn can be when it matters most. Specifically for this match, however, the former Western New York Flash star gave more credit to her team’s collective effort. “I think that in the game, we had a pretty good amount of possession. They [KC Current] weren’t pressing us that high. We played in their half for the majority of the first half of the game,” admitted Biyendolo.
The California native shared that Laura Harvey and Co. had been working on exploiting the channels—those wide areas between the 18-yard box and the sideline—to break through the opposition’s low block, something they had struggled with for a while. But once they did, it certainly paid off, didn’t it?
