What does “America’s Team” need to be, at least relevant, in the NFL? There are 2 sides to this question. First is the serious lack of depth at the quarterback position. Imagine this, you just hand your QB1 a staggering $240 million 4-year deal and when its time to play, he is out with a hamstring avulsion. On whose shoulder does the weight fall on now? Cooper Rush. Now if you were Jerry Jones, you’d probably be – “Okay, QB is filled. We can focus on other positions now.” Yeah, well, not so fast, Cowboy, cause the Ravens are pecking with a $12.2 milly deal, and off goes Rush. Now it’s just Jones, Dak and well, Will Grier. Where on earth does “America’s Team” go on from here?
What if we say the answer lies in one of the most “American” states in the US? “I like Quinn Ewers game. I like his arm. He just needs to learn in the NFL he’s gonna have to step on the gas to get more completions,” Chris Simms points out. Now on Simms’ personal list, Quinn Ewers lands on a shocking Tier 3. In amateur terms? Good to be a reliable backup – not good enough to be a starter. For the Cowboys to stand a chance at cracking the NFC, they need to completely revamp their QB game.
Don’t get us wrong, Dak Prescott is a good quarterback – we are sure that Jones wasn’t high when signing the deal. But here is the problem: in regular seasons? Dak and his arm just shine through. However, the moment you throw that guy in a playoff game, there is a 50% chance things are going to go sideways real fast.
Now fast forward to Ewers, while Simms was a bit harsh, Quinn could still stand to be a good starter. Going off of his Texas record along, Longhorns weren’t even that relevant. Things truly started to turn for Sarkisian after Card and Thompson were out and Ewers picked up the mantle.
And in those 3 years, Longhorns went from averaging 5-7 wins in regular season to making continuous appearances in Bowls and even the playoffs. But was it all without worry? Oh, h-ll no. Ewers was astoundingly bad the moment Texas had to face a good team (cut to the 2 Georgia losses and the final loss to Ohio State).
However, does it mean Quinn Ewers should be typecasted behind Dak Prescott for the rest of eternity? No. He has the arm, he has the accuracy. Does he need to work on his legs? Yes. So, let’s just let time and training do its course? The main question now is: This entire Ewers x Dallas romance – is this a one-sided fling or does Dallas really want to give their QB mantle to our good ol mullet boy?
Cowboys eyeing the pick
“I think I’m the best [in the class] and the most ready for the NFL because of what I’ve been through.” This is exactly what Ewers had to say in a recent interview. Now, credit where credit is due, this guy is not underselling himself. However, will Dallas take the bait?
Last we heard, the Cowboys scouting department had only one word for this QB prospect: “Intrigued.” That makes two of us. Although Ewers history of being injured slightly mirrors Dak (something Cowboys can find familiar), his ability to get back up and hit the gridiron and work through the pain also shines through.
Remember, at the end of the day, he still took Texas to the playoff spot last year. Yes, they lost to the Bucks but Ewers still remains a safe bet. Now with Mike McCarthy helping out the Longhorns boy with his draft – this romance could ultimately end up blossoming.
