Doubts Loom Over Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s Short Sprints as Track and Field Analyst Remains Unconvinced

4 min read

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is the biggest name dropping down to 100 meters and into the short hurdles. Can she win the whole thing and dominate as she did in the 400 m? This is probably the biggest question that the fans might have right now. She loves a new challenge and the 100-meter hurdles against some of the prominent names who are already professionals will be an apt one for the Olympic gold medallist.

Anderson Emerole has a detailed breakdown of what he thinks might happen down the line. The short hurdles are already stacked with top-notch athletes like Tia Jones, Danielle Williams, Megan Tapper, and Ditaji Kambundji

Anderson Emerole decided to rank Levrone in 4th place at 100m. For the 100 m hurdles, he had her in 6th place. But why? He said, “It was even tough to put her in 6, just being honest. If I want to look at things on paper, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s personal best is 12.65 seconds, which she ran back in 2021. But she ran 12.71 seconds last year in 2024. So we have seen you know it’s not necessarily like drastic progress or anything, and I know that she is probably gonna step things up, you know, this year as well, and at this Grand Slam Track Meet.”

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s has a personal best clock time in the 100-meter hurdles is 12.65 seconds. She set this record at the USATF Golden Games in May 2021. She clocked 12.71 seconds in the 100m hurdles in May 2024 at the Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles.

The analyst further added, “But if I look at the rest of the field between someone like Megan Tapper who’s run 12.5, Christina Clemons 12.6 Tonea Marshall 12.5 Ditaji Kambundji  12.7 like all these women have run faster you know except for Ditaji than Sydney personal best in the 100m hurdles just this year.”

He mentioned that this category was extremely stacked up, and they were athletes like Danielle Williams, so putting Levrone, who is technically new in this department, in a higher rank was not easy. Emerole further explained, “Christina Clemons has already run 12.61 seconds. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone would not only have to do, you know, run a personal best. Which I think she will do. But some of the other women would have to drastically decrease in terms of the season’s best performances.”

McLaughlin-Levrone has one past 100m flat run which was at a collegiate level back in 2018. She clocked a time of 11.07 seconds while attending the University of Kentucky. After that she has not competed professionally in a 100m. Finally, the Olympian is going to step up at the 100m hurdle in the Grand Slam Track Philadelphia.

Naturally, pressure is at an all-time high, even though Sydney is going to affect the field. Meanwhile, this is the prediction of an analyst, but what does Sydney think about her potential?

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s mentality is going into a new category

While speaking to Eric and Wallace on the USA Track and Field’s YouTube Channel, she expressed that she loved new challenges. The 25-year-old said, “I think for me… I love challenging myself, and I love being able to show range, you know? I can do 100 hurdles, I can do the 2, the 4 hurdles. I just love being in the long jump. I don’t know about that 100, but. And never that 8, but it’s okay. But I just like showing like, you know, the full-rounded athlete?”

The record-breaking athlete also pointed out that she did not like predicting the numbers. She was happy with any number, like 21.99, and her main goal was to go under 22. Levrone has already cemented her name in the 400 m hurdles by becoming the world record holder with 50.37 seconds in the Paris Olympics. She has already achieved a record breaking win in 400m for Grand Slam Track series in Kingston and Miami. The 25-year-old set a world-leading time of 52.76 seconds in her season debut at Kingston.

The stakes are high this tike since her third phase in Grand Slam Track will be in 100m. She not only has to beat veteran athletes in this category but also aspire for the bonus, $100 K. Will she be able to achieve another feat in her career? Let us know in the comments below.
