For eight long years, Aaron Boone has been the New York Yankees’ steady optimist. He defends his players nearly every time, even when it has drawn significant criticism from fans who think his optimism borders on denial. Well, this approach works well for GM Brian Cashman. When the skipper was handed a two-year contract extension back in February, Cashman commended Boone’s “temperament.”
Boone’s contract won’t expire until after the 2027 season. However, the Yankees’ current state and his ways have been hard to watch lately. They are currently 62-55, which puts them third in the American League East. Since mid-June, the Yanks have gone only 19-27, losing 29 of their last 48 games and dropping to third place in the division. Naturally, Boone and Cashman are taking all the heat for the team’s record.
Gary Sheffield Jr., the host of the “Yankees Unloaded” podcast, hinted at Boone and Cashman’s time with the Yankees coming to an end. “Aaron Boone is going to get fired and I also think Brian Cashman will lose his job relatively soon.” The call of this potentially happening is growing louder after every loss. But the question is: Does Hal Steinbrenner intend to fire both of them?

The former player’s comments say everything when it comes to the state of the Yankees

Well, if the Yankees don’t make it to the postseason, it could be a possibility. After a crushing defeat at the hands of the Houston Astros in the series opener, the Yankees finally found their footing with a 5-4 win. However, they need to do more than that to halt all the criticism.
But former Yankees skipper Joe Torre, a man with multiple World Series rings, knows the pressure Boone is under. “I feel for Aaron Boone. I’ve been in that place where you’re trying to rearrange the furniture, and hopefully it makes a difference,” he said during an interview with SNY TV.
The Yankees are currently six games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians. But as of now, their fanbase is wondering if the front office will make the changes many believe are overdue.
Yankees’ fans divided in frustration with Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman
Yankees fans have been anything but quiet lately. They are not really known to hold back. And right now, it’s been all about how long the fans have to wait until Hal Steinbrenner fires Cashman and Boone. A longtime Yankees loyalist noted, “Boone will 100% be fired by year’s end. Cashman might have a long leash just because he’s intertwined with the Steinbrenner family. He’ll prob give up his role for a more senior position or create a new senior position with his hand still in the pot.” Well, it goes without saying that at this point, Cashman is close to the Steinbrenner family. Apparently, their ties go way back to 1986 when the late George Steinbrenner met the young Cashman. That being said, it’s unlikely that Hal will part ways with Cashman. But Boone? There is a possibility—a big one, in fact!
However, he was just extended through 2027 earlier this year. “Boone just got extended in February. For him to be fired, the yanks need to miss the playoffs in one of the most embarrassing ways; this team hasn’t hit that rock bottom for them to throw away their commitment.” The Yankees did make it to the playoffs last year. It was Boone’s approach then, and it’s his approach again this year. If he takes the Yankees to the postseason picture, it’s unlikely that the team will part ways with him. At least until 2027.
Another fan, replying to Sheffield Jr.’s post, wrote, “Yes!! Fans have been begging for change for years!!” Fans have now seen eight years of Boone; even the ones who don’t hate his approach are calling for a change. When the calls started growing louder, there were many rumors that either Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez should step in. However, they don’t have any coaching or managerial experience. That’s why it’s unlikely for the former legends to take over.
Others said, “This is long overdue for both. Neither has a clue on building a competitive team.” Cashman has been the GM of the Yankees since 1998, whereas Boone has taken over the managerial role since 2017. Despite having many All-Star names on the roster, the fans believe the team is far away from being competitive.
Some are convinced nothing will ever change. “That’s not happening. Their jobs are safe—keep dreaming. Hal doesn’t like firing people.” Hal’s father, George Steinbrenner, ran the Yankees with a lack of impulse control and love of chaos for nearly four decades. However, Hal is different. He will never be like his father; he doesn’t like change!
If you think the Yankees’ crew needs a new face, who will be the best fit?
