With that being said, her nostalgic trip to the 90s pop era might bring some bittersweet memories of the scandal that rocked the very foundation of the pop industry.
Randi shared an Instagram story where she wrote, “I don’t care who was singing. I love this album. Six flags concert,” adding a cover image of the Milli Vanilli album. See, at the time of Girl You Know It’s True’s release, it spent seven weeks on the top of Billboard 200. And to add more fame to its controversial success. This album was certified Diamond in Canada and ended up selling over 1M copies at the peak of its popularity. Hell, it even earned Milli Vanilli a Grammy award for Best New Artist in February 1990.
But within 9 months, every inch of success this album garnered was taken away from it. Once, their music producer, Frank Farian, revealed in November that his lead singers Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan hadn’t sung a single note in the album. “Girl You Know It’s True” came tumbling down, obliterating careers, shattering trust and rattling the pop world. Arista Records deleted the album, making it the first time a largest-selling album ever got wiped from its catalog.
More embarrassment soon followed. Their Grammy Award was also revoked, making it the first time a Grammy was ever snatched away. Class-action lawsuits were filed against the album asking for refunds. After multiple battles in the courtroom, an estimated 10M buyers got refunds. Not only that, but they were also allowed to keep the recordings. As for Rob & Fab, they tried to build their career. However, ended up failing miserably.
Their public image and trust were shattered. And no amount of real singing was able to repair the damage of the Milli Vanilli controversy. See, Lamar was coming off his electric Super Bowl 59 halftime show. So, all eyes were supposed to be on Lamar’s performance at Caesars Superdome, right? But this isn’t the concern. Randi openly praised MGK, probably knowing he had an ongoing feud with Lamar. Going back a few years ago, when the Rap Devil singer dropped a diss track on Eminem’s Rap God. K Dot apparently didn’t like it. He called out MGK, saying, “MGK needs to respect the greats.” Who knows? Randi didn’t know all of this. And only enjoyed MGK’s music because she liked it. You know when you are a music lover.
