In MLB, team name changes are nothing new. From the Houston Colt .45s becoming the Astros in a nod to the city’s ties to space exploration, to the California Angels evolving into the Los Angeles Angels to better reflect their market, name shifts have often marked turning points in team identity and public image.
But one of the most significant and socially charged name changes in recent memory came in 2021, when the Cleveland Indians became the Cleveland Guardians. This wasn’t about market expansion or modern branding. It was a response to decades-long controversy surrounding the use of Native American imagery and calls for greater cultural sensitivity.
However, what seemed like a settled issue recently flared up when President Donald Trump publicly criticized the name change, sparking a fresh debate. His remarks didn’t go unanswered. In a swift and firm response, the Lake Erie Native American Council issued a sharply worded statement. They denounced the President’s comments and defended the change as a step toward respect and inclusion.
“Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige are systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!” Trump shared his view about the Cleveland Guardians when he was talking about changing the name of the Washington Commanders in the NFL.
“In President Trump’s unsurprisingly racist remarks over the weekend, calling for the Cleveland Guardians to revert to its previous team name… This damaging and thoughtless assertion is wholly untrue,” the Lake Erie Native American Council issued a statement.

They also shared their solidarity with the Guardians! “The Lake Erie Native American Council cannot be clearer in reaffirming that there is no honor for Indigenous people in dehumanizing mascots that reduce us to racist stereotypes.”
Well, the name change for the Cleveland Indians was much more than a gimmick. The decision came after years of criticism from Native American groups and social activists. They argued that the Indians’ name and the team’s former Chief Wahoo logo were offensive and perpetuated racial stereotypes. As per the council, naming the team Indians again reflects a narrative of using them as mascots and promoting stereotypes.
The local councils and social entities are strongly standing behind the Guardians. And that’s maybe a reason behind the Guardians’ official statement, again denouncing the demand for a name change.
The Guardians seem to be unabated in their stands
While the local council shared their solidarity with the Guardians, they also commended the franchise for standing with their cause.
“I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but it’s a decision we made and we’ve gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years, and we’re excited about the future that’s in front of us,” Cleveland Guardians president Chris Antonetti released a statement on Sunday night.
So, despite the President’s push, it doesn’t look like the Guardians are interested in turning back the clock. Chris Antonetti, Cleveland’s President of Baseball Operations, said he wasn’t even aware of Trump’s comments before their meeting and made it clear that switching back to the “Indians” name isn’t something that’s been on his radar.
While he acknowledged that people have varying opinions about the name change, Antonetti didn’t give any sign that the organization is considering a return to its old identity anytime soon.
On other news, Trump’s ties to Cleveland’s MLB team go way back over 40 years. He even tried to buy the franchise in 1983, but that deal failed. Now again, after years, that history is coming to the frontline owing to Trump’s demand for a name change.
Now, apart from what Trump or the council is saying, it’s far more important what the fans are demanding. In the next few days, we might gauge the fans’ reactions to the name change demand. Wait for more updates…
