Dodgers Rookie Crushes John Mayer’s Hopes, Leaving His Favorite Singer Heartbroken at Dodger Stadium

4 min read

Seven Grammy-winning artist and lifelong baseball enthusiast John Mayer marked his presence at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the New York Mets. It was a four-game series that ended in a split. But the big question is, who was Mayer rooting for? Apparently, it’s the Mets. Meanwhile, a Dodgers rookie, who also happens to be Mayer’s long-time fan, left him disappointed with his game-winning performance.

Yes, the creator of “Room for Squares,” “Heavier Things,” and “Continuum” was there in the stands. And overjoyed by his presence, Dodgers’ rookie Jack Dreyer showed up early to the field only to see him. He couldn’t get the chance to see him before the game; however, during the game, Dreyer dominated Mayer’s favorite team—the Mets.

Pitching in front of his favorite artist, the left-hander threw two scoreless innings, contributing to the Dodgers’ 6–5 win over the Mets.

While Dreyer’s fan moment might not have panned out like he imagined, overall, it was an exciting day for him. He performed exceptionally on the field. The announcer revealed that Dreyer is Mayer’s biggest fan. “In Your Atmosphere” is one of those performances that Dreyer attended in 2007 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. It’s a memory that’s stuck with him ever since.

But Mayer has a notable connection with the New York Mets. In the past, he has expressed strong appreciation for the team and their shortstop, Francisco Lindor. During his Sphere concerts, he admired Lindor’s dedication and resilience. In fact, on April 29, he threw the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field when the Mets hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Not sure if Dreyer finally got his chance to meet Mayer. But one thing is certain: In front of his favorite artist, he might have broken his heart by handing his preferred team a tough loss.

It was the Mets’ eighth-inning disaster that handed the Dodgers a win

It will catch you off guard that the Mets (39-24) were barely 5 outs away from a straight win against the Dodgers (38-25). However, they witnessed a one-run lead slipping right through them in the error-filled eighth inning.

The Mets had a 5-4 lead when reliever Reed Garret almost escaped the inning when Andy Pages hit a grounder to third baseman Brett Baty. Baty had a clear play while Will Smith was running home. However, his throw spiked straight into the dirt. Catcher Francisco Alvarez failed to handle it, and it all went into chaos. The ball popped into the air, and Alvarez collided with Garrett.

More than a regular-season matchup, it seemed like a blooper reel. Thinking out loud, Smith might have been out at home if there had been no collision. But instead, he ended up scoring the tying run that gave the Dodgers an edge.

After three batters, former Met Michael Conforto stepped up. He struggled at the plate throughout this season, but this time, he delivered. He hit an RBI single that marked his first two-out RBI of the season. Eventually, it gave the Dodgers a 6-5 lead, which they held till the end.

The Dodgers had injury woes in their rotation, yet they managed to split the four-game series with the Mets. They are leading the NL West right now, and for the Mets, it was just their 3rd loss across the last 12 games. Well, it was a tough one, but the Dodgers seem to always find a way to escape a potential loss.
