After Seth Jones, it’s another breaking news update for the Florida Panthers. The Panthers have placed Matthew Tkachuk on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. NHL teams are making major decisions to reshape their rosters in hopes of improving their performance.
With this move, the Panthers now have around $8.7 million in cap space, with 21 out of 23 players remaining active. The addition of $2.5 million from the Seth Jones deal adds to their flexibility. However, the team currently has no draft picks for this season. A 2026 draft pick was already sent to the Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones.

AHL’s Chris Driedger is also in talks with the Panthers, as they recalled him after trading goaltender Spencer Knight on Saturday. Driedger joins the team with a 10-6-4 record as part of the Charlotte Checkers this season. With Tkachuk sidelined, Driedger will take up the backup role alongside Sergei Bobrovsky.
What happened to Matthew Tkachuk?
Representing the United States in the 4 Nations Face-Off alongside his brother Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk sustained an injury that has now placed him on LTIR with the Panthers. The left-winger has missed four games since the tournament and is expected to remain sidelined until March 20, 2025.
This is a developing story…
