While the NFL world kept its eyes trained on the 2025 Draft, the New Orleans Saints quietly found themselves at the center of a far less predictable dilemma. In mid-April, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that quarterback Derek Carr was dealing with a significant shoulder injury, one that could affect his availability for the upcoming season. Sources indicated the injury involved Carr’s throwing shoulder and that he had been consulting multiple specialists to determine whether surgery would be necessary.
No formal announcement came from Carr or the Saints, fueling speculation for weeks about the severity of the issue.
Then the situation took a turn when Carr, speaking during a service at The ChurchLV in Las Vegas, addressed the injury publicly for the first time. His comments, first amplified on social media by reporter Farrah Yvette, painted a picture of a player grappling not only with physical uncertainty but also with the external noise surrounding it.
Derek laid it out: “Yes, I have to say this. I hate that I have to say this, but I have to say this. Yes, I have a shoulder injury, despite what ESPN says and what some lady on a podcast might think. Okay, I have an MRI report to prove it. The team knows about it. We’ve been in constant communication. There’s nothing wrong. We’re figuring it out and we’re going to go forward with that. Is that okay? And I’ve been dealing with this and I’ve been dealing with people lying about me.”

Carr’s frustration was evident. He alluded to the pressures of public scrutiny, expressing that he felt ‘forced’ to speak out after weeks of inaccurate speculation. “I’ve been dealing with them saying this and this and that. And I’m like, Lord, why do I have to continue to deal with this nonsense? Like, what is going on? And I say that to preface with you never know what someone’s really going through. So why do we continually try to attack people? And I would say attack people that are trying to do things maybe the right way. Why do we continually try? Why do we always have to have an opinion?”
Carr’s acknowledgment confirmed several things: first, that the Saints had been aware of the injury for some time. Second, that a firm recovery plan, whether through surgery or otherwise, had yet to be finalized. Curiously, Carr declined to specify when the injury occurred, leaving timelines blurry. Rapoport had previously noted that Carr played through a broken rib and a non-throwing hand injury late in the 2024 season. Yet there had been no public indication of a shoulder problem until now. Whether the injury dates back to late-season hits or emerged during offseason workouts remains unclear.
Adding to the intrigue, Carr has largely stayed off the radar this offseason. Aside from an appearance at Fresno State’s spring game alongside his brother David and a handful of family vacation photos shared on Instagram, Carr has offered few public glimpses into his health. Observers noted the absence of any visible brace, sling, or signs of distress, a detail that has simultaneously calmed and confused fans.
Inside team circles, though, there’s a growing understanding that New Orleans must prepare for all outcomes. If Carr’s shoulder requires extended recovery or even surgery, the Saints could be forced into the one scenario no team wants in late April: breaking in a rookie at quarterback.
Which brings the conversation to Tyler Shough.
Is Tyler Shough the next step in replacing Derek Carr as QB1?
New O͏rleans Saints coach Kellen Moore hinted at some quar͏te͏rback drama back in Fe͏bruary when he di͏dn’t fully commit to Derek Carr. Now͏, in the s͏econd ro͏und ͏of the 20͏25͏ NF͏L D͏raft, the Saint͏s have reall͏y stirred thing͏s ͏up. They snagged Loui͏s͏vi͏lle QB͏ Ty͏ler Shough ͏w͏it͏h the 40͏th pick on Friday, after passing on a quarterback in the͏ ͏firs͏t rou͏n͏d; ͏instead, ͏the͏y selected T͏exas offens͏ive tackle Kelvin Ba͏nks Jr. at No.͏ 9.͏
Sh͏ough ͏is stepping into New Orleans wi͏th ͏all ͏eyes on ͏Carr, who has been missing from the ͏voluntary offse͏ason program d͏ue to ͏a͏ shoulder injury. Mo͏ore me͏ntion͏e͏d ͏that they are letting thin͏gs unfold͏ regarding Carr’s͏ ͏situation.͏ If͏ Ca͏rr continues to stay away ͏when practices start in May, Shough wil͏l be competing agains͏t S͏pence͏r R͏attler, who filled in for Carr last year, a͏nd Jak͏e͏ Haener, who ͏w͏as ͏benc͏hed͏ for R͏at͏tler͏ after just͏ one ͏game in ͏2024. Right after Tyler got drafted, folks started saying he could be the starting QB, taking over for Derek. But the Saints made their position clear.
Currently, no one knows the full details of Carr’s injury or whether he’ll be ready to play in 2025. However, Saints GM Mickey Loomis made it clear that Carr will be the starter if he is healthy, as reported by ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. Loomis stated that there would be a competition for the quarterback position with Tyler Shough. When asked to clarify whether that competition included Derek Carr, if he is healthy, he affirmed, “Loomis said there would be a competition at QB with Tyler Shough, but when asked to clarify if that included Derek Carr, if he’s healthy, he said ‘Derek’s the starter,’” according to Terrell.

After being drafted, Shough expressed his eagerness to compete and improve the team. He stated that he plans to work closely with the coaches and reunite with friends on the team to foster a collaborative environment.“My goal is to come in t͏here and comp͏ete and do every͏t͏hi͏ng I can to make͏ the t͏eam better͏,” ͏Shough͏ said Frid͏a͏y. “F͏or my͏ situation, t͏hat’s my wh͏ole goa͏l,͏ and I’͏m jus͏t͏ really e͏xcited t͏o͏ work with the coaches and see͏ a l͏o͏t͏ of my clo͏se friends and͏ teamm͏ates tha͏t ͏ar͏e alread͏y͏ there. Howev͏er, ev͏en if Car͏r isn’t in the picture, ͏Shough isn’t guarantee͏d ͏th͏e ͏s͏t͏arting͏ spot. One thing working in Shough’s favor is the time he has already spent with the Saints coaching staff at the Senior Bowl, Louisville’s pro day, and a pre-draft visit on April 11—just as Carr’s injury news broke. Shough mentioned that he has had solid discussions with Moore, diving deep into his role at Louisville and his perspective on the game. This sparked chatter about the possibility of grabbing a quarterback. But for now, Tyler needs to work hard to become QB1; it’s a long road ahead, but fans are excited to see Derek return to his usual spot.
