Deion Sanders Sends 6-Word Message on Hunger After Buccaneers’ $2.9M Shilo Sanders Announcement

5 min read

Back in his younger days, Deion Sanders would sneak off to the dog track, captivated by greyhounds chasing a mechanical rabbit they’d never catch. Years later, that image stuck with him, not as a memory, but as a metaphor. “I’m always trying to get to the next level,” he explained. For Sanders, the chase itself became the goal: always striving, never settling, forever hungry.

Now, as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Coach Prime’s coaching mantra is simple: “Want, Work, Win.” He tells those young guys who are training under him. “You’ve got to want this thing. Your coaches can’t want it for you.” That hunger—self-driven and relentless—is non-negotiable. It’s all about Sanders’ “Hunger” philosophy. If you want the reward, you’ve got to have that hunger. The man’s not just preaching football.

Nope. He’s talking about life. He knows that life’s not going to be easy, and it’s constantly going to throw curveballs at him. So, he better be ready. And he isn’t going to stop. Not right now. On Wednesday, Coach Prime hopped up on his official ‘X’ handle, returning with yet another quote from his hunger philosophy.

“You’ve got to Stay Hungry & never allow yourself to get full,” Sanders wrote. “You thrive off of that want & that need that you’ve created inside. You are the 1 & never forget that u won’t ever have it easy, cause you’re different. Yo situation will never be normal, so stay ready.” That’s Coach Prime for you.

You’ve got to Stay Hungry & never allow yourself to get full. You thrive off of that want & that need that you’ve created inside. You are the 1 & never forget that u won’t ever have it easy cause you’re different. Yo situation will never be normal so stay ready. #CoachPrime

Deion Sanders’ philosophy is not just limited to his coaching career. His athletic career in the pros is no doubt a testament to his mindset. The NFL legend is a two-time Super Bowl champion, having appeared in 14 NFL seasons. And yeah, he also played for nine seasons in Major League Baseball. Back in ’92, Sanders became the only player to play in a Super Bowl and the World Series.

Fast forward to now, and just like in his playing career, Coach Prime is still a supreme motivator. He’s out there shaping young athletes as they’re the future NFL stars. Whether it’s his kids—Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, who were just drafted by the Buccaneers and Browns, respectively, or the receiver/cornerback, Travis Hunter—the second overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft.

Long story short: Deion Sanders’ hunger philosophy hasn’t just shaped his NFL career; it’s now shaping the career of young athletes as well. And his eldest kid, Shilo Sanders, is one of ’em.

Shilo Sanders is officially a part of the Bucs

Ahead of the 2025 NFL draft, Deion Sanders and family were confident that their kids, Shedeur and Shio, would be drafted at the earliest as a result of their grind at Colorado. But as Coach Prime says, “Situation will never be normal”, it’s safe to say that the Sanders household was ready when Shedeur and Shilo were not drafted on day 1 of the draft. But let bygones be bygones and let’s focus on the silver lining—at least, that’s what Deion Sanders is doing.

While Shedeur is out there gearing up to start his quarterback career in Cleveland, Shilo just inked his rookie deal with the Bucs. Yeah, even after remaining undrafted in the draft. The Bucs signed the former Colorado safety and offered him his rookie deal during the rookie mini-camp. The contract terms include a three-year $2.96 million deal, and get this, Coach Prime is nothing but proud of his kid.

Right after that went down, Shilo’s dad took to his IG handle and shared a message for him. “I’m so Proud of @shilosanders! He’s focused, dedicated & hungry. I can’t wait to see the product he puts on the field. They have REAL PURPOSE & yall know why,” he captioned his post, featuring a picture of Shilo with his contract news.

During his rookie mini-camp, Shilo caught everyone’s attention and was praised by the head coach, Todd Bowles, who called him intelligent. For the time being, it’s not officially confirmed where he will fit in the Bucs’ locker room. But considering Tampa already has veteran Antoine Winfield Jr., free safety is the only likely available spot for Sanders on the Bucs’ secondary, per reports.
