“They are hilarious and humanize everybody.” These were the words spoken by Dave Portnoy in praise of Studbudz. But who knew this praise would open up a can of worms? Probably not the Minnesota Lynx duo. Portnoy is notorious for being a stark Caitlin Clark fan and an outright hater of Angel Reese. The entrepreneur has often critiqued Reese, as seen in his latest criticism of how brilliant Reese was in marketing Mebounds. His words, not ours.
But this directed hate towards Reese became an eyesore for Studbudz. Portnoy, being a fan of them, also attracted criticism towards the Minnesota Lynx duo. The hate has grown so much that Courtney Williams had to come forward and air some things out. What was the reason behind this backlash, and what promises has Williams made? Let’s find out.
It all started when Studbudz made an appearance in the All-Star weekend. For the uninitiated, Studbudz is a duo comprising Minnesota Lynx players Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman. As part of the WNBA, they took fans behind the scenes of the All-Star weekend. The community received this new angle positively. What was not received well was the duo inviting Dave Portnoy to their stream. However, Williams stood tall on their decision to invite Portnoy on their July 23, 2025, live stream. The Minnesota Lynx duo, however, did promise they’ll ask him about the Reese hate.

“Okay, so when Dave comes on, we’re gonna ask him, ‘Hey Dave, Why are you talking about Angel like that?’” Williams spoke. Hiedeman also added alongside Williams, “Because we love her, bad.” These two players explained that they are open to dialogue with anybody. While the entrepreneur may have differing views, they would still talk to them and learn their perspective. Williams also noted that Portnoy will definitely own up to hating on Reese. Surprisingly, it did not take long for the sports entrepreneur to give his two cents on the issue.
Dave Portnoy responds to hating on Angel Reese
Shortly afterwards, the 48-year-old had his defense ready for this matter. While he may be an Angel Reese hater, he still spoke in support of the Studbudz duo. Taking to X to clarify his stance, he said, “People are big mad at Studbudz just cause we talked. W fans are freaking nuts.” But in the same breath, he spoke about his love for the league. Saying he is an outspoken critic, he once again reaffirmed his stance of Clark support and Reese hate. “It’s called sports,” he defended himself.
That statement is true. If anything, Portnoy is a vocal supporter of the W. And he is also looking to become a stakeholder in this league. That is, if the higher-ups allow him. He recently pitched his desire to own a WNBA team in Boston for a whopping price of $250 million. But welcoming an open-mouth critic in the W, like Portnoy, can become a nightmare for Cathy Engelbert. Like his critique of the executives using Studbudz as ammunition.
“Studbudz has done more marketing for the WNBA with their 72-hour stream than the bozos running the league have done since its inception.” This was the shocking statement given by Portnoy, looking at the treatment given to the WNBA All-Star game. Who knows what fire he would spew once he joins the league? Maybe if he joins Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman for a live debate, fans may get a preview of it. One thing, however, is certain that Portnoy, along with Williams and others, wants this league to grow into the next big thing. And that he would continue to hate on Angel Reese.
