“I came short of another title fight. I’m never going to get another title fight. I’d have to win 10 in a row, probably, to get another one, and I don’t think I have it in me to go through what it takes to get another one. I’ve been doing this for a long time.” Dustin Poirier painfully revealed an obvious fact in a chat with Ariel Helwani. ‘The Diamond’ does not want to go back to the drawing board and make another climb for a lightweight title shot. After three failed attempts at UFC 242, 269, and 302, respectively, he’s finally capping off his career at UFC 318 in his hometown of Louisiana.
But guess what? ‘The Diamond’ will have a chance to win a champion, the BMF title, when he butts heads against Max Holloway. But before we approach Poirier’s last dance on 19 July, UFC legend Daniel Cormier appears to have spotted a major issue when it comes to the BMF belt. As we all know, not many people are fans of the belt, but there’s no doubt that the holders of that championship are nothing less than legends of the game. Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje, and the aforementioned Holloway!
However, that doesn’t take away the fact that the consensus among fans is largely negative. But Cormier doesn’t fall into that category. “I love the BMF title,” ‘DC’ stated on the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ show. However, he claimed that there is a problem. The issue at hand is the fact that the section of fans who hate the BMF title could get their wish if Poirier happens to edge past Holloway for a third time in his UFC career.
‘The Diamond’ will not only win the belt but could also walk away from the promotion with the championship, which is something that the Hall of Famer wants Dana White and the UFC brass to be aware of. “Here’s the problem. It’s a problem, but can also be a great thing. There is a certain section of the mixed martial arts community that thinks the BMF title is only a gimmick… and it needs to be done away with,” Daniel Cormier further stated. “Hey, BMF title gets defended in New Orleans. Dustin Poirier wins the BMF title and walks away, title goes out the door with him… That’s the danger.”
The former double champ further claimed that the design of Poirier’s final UFC fight has put the BMF title in a worrying situation because a win would give the bragging rights to the Lafayette native. “Dana White, Hunter Campbell, it is a retirement fight, and loser leaves town. Essentially, a loser leaves town match. Dustin Poirier leaves town. He takes the belt with him. That’s it. BMF title is gone.”

Although some fans see no value in the title, DC and his co-host Chael Sonnen appear to be big fans of the strap. But it seems like the former double champion’s worries could come true as Poirier is hellbent on making a massive impact in his retirement fight. Here’s what he had to say.
Dustin Poirier wants to ride off into the sunset with the BMF strap at UFC 318
Dustin Poirier was almost done when he lost to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 and squandered his third chance at undisputed gold. But after healing from his injuries and getting back on the mat to train, he had an epiphany about ending his career on his terms. During a recent interview, the 36-year-old claimed that he was looking to win and retire with it, given that the PPV is taking place in his home state of Louisiana.
“This has been a long time in the works, getting Louisiana on board, getting the UFC to even think about coming back to Louisiana,” Dustin Poirier stated during an interview with ‘MMA Junkie’. Moreover, it will be a full-circle moment for Poirier since he welcomed a 20-year-old Holloway into the UFC back in 2012. Now, ‘Blessed’ will bid farewell to the veteran star, and Poirier seems very pleased about it.
“Max is a legend. I’ve got so much respect for the guy. He’s done it all right. I was his first fight in the UFC, and he’s going to be my last,” Poirier further stated. “That never-say-die cloth. Max is that. I am that. It’s amazing. If I can get my hand raised again, retire with the BMF belt – I’m the BMF forever,” ‘The Diamond’ added, hinting at possibly retiring the BMF belt forever.
Well, there’s always the possibility of Dana White introducing a new BMF belt, just like an undisputed title, after Dustin Poirier retires. Regardless, let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
