Dan Campbell Can’t Part Ways With Injuries as Lions HC Announces Training Camp Crisis

2 min read

Training camp is officially rolling, and across the league, we’re already seeing the same old headaches without much resolution in sight. The Browns’ quarterback carousel in Berea? Still spinning. Micah Parsons and the Cowboys locked in a contract standoff out in Oxnard? No progress there either. And in Detroit, Dan Campbell can’t catch a break, as his defense keeps getting shredded by the injury bug. Same stories, different year—and somehow, none of them feel any closer to an end.

The Lions’ troubles kicked off last week when they placed six players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, including some key contributors on defense. But the real blow came with Dan Campbell’s gut-punch of an update heading into camp: defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike is already ruled out for the entire 2025 season.

Fast forward to day one of the training camp, Ennis Rakestraw walked off the field after a collision in 11-on-11s, sustaining a contusion. Campbell noted that Rakestraw “should be okay,” and confirmed he will miss a couple of days of the training camp. And now? Well, let’s just say Campbell and the Lions have found themselves amidst an injury crisis. The head coach recently revealed that RB Sione Vaki won’t practice today. To worsen it, Campbell “thinks” that DL Roy Lopez will be out as well after he got “stepped on” yesterday.

Lions HC Dan Campbell says RB Sione Vaki won’t practice today. He “thinks” DL Roy Lopez will be out as well after he got “stepped on” yesterday.

Says it might be a couple days for both players, but he doesn’t think the issues are major.
