The moment Paige Bueckers’ name was called in the 2025 WNBA draft, the Dallas Wings’ faithful started to dream. Following in the mold of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, they imagined that the Wings, with Paige at the helm, would start racking up wins. However, things have not gone as planned, and the Dallas Wings have stumbled to the bottom of the table with an 8-23 record. While questions have been raised about coaching, according to the Dallas Wings GM, there may be other significant developments regarding Bueckers as well.
Usually considered a ball-carrying point guard, the Wings GM has suggested a slight change. According to Curt Miller, the key to extracting Paige’s full potential might be through a role change. While it may seem strange to see a point guard without the ball, something similar has happened with Stephen Curry.
With Draymond Green initiating most of the offense, the Golden State Warriors’ talisman is even more dangerous with his off-ball movement. Considering Bueckers’ similarities with Curry, if the Dallas Wings do decide to pull the trigger, this could be a game-changer for the franchise. In an interview with the Dallas Hoops Journal, Curt Miller explained his reasoning.
He said, “She enjoys being off the ball and then brought back into actions, not worn down by defensive point guards pressuring her full court.” Navigating through 94ft off pressure can certainly take a toll on a player. With so much energy spent merely protecting the ball, there is a risk of being gassed by the end of the game. Miller pointed out Grace Berger as a blueprint for how the team may choose to utilize Bueckers next season.

He continued and said that Paige’s versatility is key to success as she can play in various lineups. He said, “At the same time, Paige can be on the ball in bigger lineups, allowing for some big-guard looks.” With bigger guards defending her, Buckers can use her quickness and agility and expose their weaknesses.

While no team in the league would want to languish at the bottom and waste a year off a talent like Paige Bueckers, there is still a lot of time for the Wings to figure things out. Paige is still in her rookie year and is already showing signs of the kind of domination everyone expected from her. Sure, the Wings’ season has been a wash, but there’s a silver lining behind this dark cloud.
Dallas Wings’ GM has positive amidst underwhelming season
The 2025 WNBA season has not been kind to the Wings. While hopes were pretty high, it has been a season full of blows and inconsistencies. After starting the campaign with a grueling opening 5-game stretch where they played the Minnesota Lynx twice, they suffered their first major blow. Offseason addition Tyasha Harris was ruled out for the season.
That kicked off an injuries galore for the Wings. DiJonai Carrington, Maddy Siegrist, and Paige Bueckers have all spent considerable time in the infirmary. These injuries and inconsistencies doomed the Wings’ season. However, Curt Miller, there is a blessing in disguise.
Having one of the worst records in the league has led the Dallas Wings to have the best odds to win the 2026 WNBA draft lottery. With another loaded rookie class to select from, the Dallas Wings might just be able to create a super team from the draft. There is even a chance that Dallas might be able to draft one of Paige Bueckers’ college teammates in Azzi Fudd.
This season may have been a wash for the Dallas Wings. However, with a chance to draft another high lottery pick and having one of the biggest salary caps available to spend, the Wings are positioning themselves to be a big player this coming offseason. Led by Paige Bueckers, the Wings have all the pieces to build a team capable of winning championships.
