The Dallas Mavericks just pulled off a lottery miracle—and CEO Rick Welts is still catching his breath. With only a 1.8% chance of landing the No. 1 pick, the Mavs jumped the line and now have the right to select Duke’s Cooper Flagg, the national player of the year and top prospect in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Rick’s reaction? Pure disbelief. “If we’re not number four, I might have a heart attack,” he joked. Once Dallas landed in the top three, Welts was floored: “It just feels like a reversal of fortune of epic proportions.”
While Welts made it clear they haven’t officially picked Flagg yet, the writing’s on the wall—and it looks a lot like a Flagg jersey. With Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, and now the chance to add Flagg to the frontcourt, Welts said the roster is starting to feel “unrealistic.” Coach Jason Kidd has his hands full, and Mavs fans are finally getting something to cheer about after a wild season that saw Luka Doncic shipped to L.A.
Pair that with Paige Bueckers joining the Dallas WNBA scene? The city is about to be the epicenter of basketball hype. Draft night can’t come soon enough.
