Dak Prescott’s Emotional Farewell to Outgoing Star as Cowboys QB Ditches Jerry Jones’ Team for John Harbaugh

3 min read

Dak Prescott has been the face of the Cowboys for nearly a decade. In his journey, he’s built some real bonds with his teammates. However, in the NFL, players come and go, but that doesn’t make the goodbyes any easier. Just look at Tom Brady and Julian Edelman or Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb. We just know some connections run deep. Now Dak is facing one of those tough moments. The time has come when he bids goodbye to a teammate who’s been by his side. Guess it’s always bittersweet when a player moves on.

Dak Prescott shared an emotional farewell to Cooper Rush on Instagram. The news broke that the former Cowboys backup QB has signed with the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year deal. Prescott re-shared a post from @footballforever announcing the signing. The post featured Rush in his Cowboys uniform with the word “SIGNED” behind him. Prescott added his own message, writing, “Thank you Brother ”, showing appreciation for his longtime teammate.

Except for a brief time with the Giants in 2020, Rush had mostly been with Dallas since 2017. He was a support to Prescott’s backup, stepping up in key moments, mainly during Prescott’s injury absences. Now, he joins John Harbaugh’s Ravens, likely as a backup to Lamar Jackson. This move also raises questions about the Cowboys’ QB strength behind Prescott. especially since they previously traded for Trey Lance. Meanwhile, speculation about Prescott’s own future in Dallas continues, as contract negotiations with Jerry Jones remain unresolved.

Talking about Rush as a reliable backup, his most notable performance came in 2022 when he stepped up during Dak Prescott’s injury. He led Dallas to a 4-1 record and proved he could handle the pressure. In 2024, he played 12 games and started eight, throwing for 1,844 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing 60.7% of his passes. Though he went 4-4 as a starter, his leadership and poise were invaluable, making his departure a tough loss.

Cooper Rush’s new chapter with the Ravens

Cooper Rush has agreed to a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, worth up to $12.2 million. This move positions Rush as the primary backup to star quarterback Lamar Jackson, filling a crucial role in Baltimore’s offensive strategy. Rush’s experience and reliability make him a valuable asset for the Ravens. During his tenure with the Cowboys, he amassed a 9-5 record as a starter, throwing for 2,958 yards with an 18-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 60.18% completion rate.

His ability to perform under pressure aligns with the Ravens’ need for a dependable backup, especially considering Jackson’s dynamic playing style, which can expose him to potential injuries.

For the Cowboys, Rush’s departure raises questions about their quarterback depth. With Trey Lance entering free agency and Will Grier remaining as the only backup, Dallas faces a pressing need to bolster their quarterback room. The upcoming NFL Draft offers an opportunity to address this gap, with the Cowboys holding the No. 12, No. 44, and No. 76 picks in the first three rounds.

How they choose to navigate this situation will be important for their offensive stability in the coming seasons. Rush’s move to Baltimore will provide him with a fresh start in the ever-evolving nature of NFL rosters.
