Cowboys Assign DeMarvion Overshown’s No. to George Pickens at OTAs – Report

5 min read

When the George Pickens trade hammer fell, it took people no time to realize the impact of the move. Pickens left the Steelers and went on to Dallas to explore his chances to “grow.” A skillful wordplay on the much-talked-about crossroads with Mike Tomlin. Immediately after the trade, fans began dreaming up crafty combinations between Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Pickens. Now, Pickens brings his signature energy to Dallas and gives Prescott’s offence more flexibility than ever. Just when you thought things couldn’t get more interesting, Pickens showed up wearing a number that is all too familiar to the fans.

When DeMarvion Overshown entered the 2024 season, the No. 13 shone proudly on his back. But that wasn’t the number he wanted to wear. Overshown had been fighting for the No. 0 ever since he joined Dallas. It was the number he donned in college, and in a historic move, he finally became “Agent Zero” again this April. That left his No. 13 unclaimed for about a month. But now, it looks like that number has been claimed, and it’s by none other than George Pickens himself.

As per a post on X by Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr., as of now, Pickens wears the no. 13 for the OTAs. Hill wrote, “I was told by someone who has seen Cowboys practice that Pickens is wearing no. 13 right now.” But is this set in stone? Hill doesn’t seem to think so. In a separate post prior to this, Hill had written, “New Cowboys WR George Pickens will be at OTAs today. Whatever number he wears at practice may not be his permanent number, per source. The Cowboys have yet to put his number on a roster” So that’s that. We’ll still have to wait a while to see Pickens in his ‘official’ jersey. But the fans are hyped to see DeMarvion’s old number on the field already.

Now, if there’s one thing that the Cowboys like, it’s their traditions. CeeDee Lamb chose the no. 88 to honor the greats before him like Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant. And if his performance is any indication so far, he has done his best to uphold the standard that comes with that number. And now, Pickens has a similar road ahead of him.

If the No. 13 is finalized, Pickens will be set to follow the footsteps of Michael Gallup. Gallup was the most iconic player to have played WR for Dallas for six long seasons. Gallup amassed 62 TDs over his six regular seasons with the Cowboys, and now it’s up to Pickens to add to the glory of the No. 13. But whether that number is official or not, with Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, the glory days for Dallas might just be around the corner again.

George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb – dynamic Dallas duo

QB Dak Prescott now has not one, but two explosive WRs to help him win. Pickens joins the Cowboys with impressive numbers. He has already amassed 1000+ yards in one season with the Steelers, and with his drive to grow, we can be sure to see more of that. Lamb, with 5 years in Dallas, is coming off a fourth season where he’s got more than 1000 yards. But it’s not a competition between the two. As Lamb has already clarified his stance on the matter. “We’re both No. 1’s. It ain’t no [1A, 1B situation], none of that. It’s No. 1. You look over there, you see No. 1. You look over here, you see another No. 1. So do what you gotta do with that.”

And George Pickens? He’s thrilled to be a Cowboy. He likes the “mojo” in Dallas. And he’s gearing up to play with Lamb. Pickens had notably highlighted this in an interview already. “Oh, it excites me a lot – In the game of football, we can work off each other. There’s no, ‘Oh, he gets the ball, I get the ball’ – we’re working off each other. That’s why I always come back to, you know, building a winning culture and that’s kind of what we’ve been talking about in Dallas.” They are both here to help Prescott as much as they can. And “working off each other” is the best scenario anyone can hope for.

Fans are eager to see the star WRs in action. As the team continues their training, we are bound to see some explosive plays between Prescott, Lamb, and Pickens. It will all boil down to this golden trio heading into the new season. Have the Cowboys finally flipped the script on their losing streak with Pickens? We’ll know for sure when the season officially begins.
