“I won’t be throwing. I just think five years of film says everything I can do,” said Cam Ward during the NFL Combine last month in Indianapolis. He was right. 2 factors were running the play. The quarterbacks are the most sought players. Second, he had played enough football, broke enough records to generate interest from the league. In 5 years of his college, the signal caller played 57 games (all starters) and had 18,137 passing yards, 158 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.
However, his private coach Darrell Cobert Jr. revealed another reason for him, for not throwing at the combine. He claimed that Cam Ward wanted to throw, but changed his mind at the last moment as he knew the attention would at the Miami’s Pro Day. And he wanted to bring focus to his teammates before the draft.
The coach just confirmed the Miami QB’s hint from the combine. Cam Ward had then said, “Me throwing here is not going to move me any type of way. I’m just excited to throw at my pro day to the best receiving corps in the country.” The Pro Day went smoothly for the athlete. More than 100 executives from different teams showed up. Who wouldn’t want to see a great talent? Everyone just tuned in.

At one point during the drills, he turned around and yelled something at the Titans’ President Burke Nihill and GM Mike Borgonzi. Cam Ward had a clear aim, “I am solidifying it.” What? The number 1 draft pick position! It’s all about the respect now. In the combine, he explained his tough journey from the childhood. His focus was on the work ethic and determination that made him succeed.
At the same venue, the other projected number 1 pick, Colorado Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders, had contrary views. He carried a look of fashion and flash with him while claiming he will change the culture wherever he lands. The pride of being from the Sanders clan also came through. However, there are other contenders.
DE Abdul Carter challenges QBs Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders
Call it arrogance or being egoistic, the Penn State DE Abdul Carter is not backing down. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year also wants the attention from the NFL world. And with a month remaining in draft, it’s getting interesting.
On March 24, Carter took to X and warned the other players in the draft. The DE’s tweet read, “#1 overall pick, 30 days away… InshaAllah. Don’t let all this QB need talk fool y’all. It’s already known who’s the Best, and no QB is in that discussion! Like I said, the Best PLAYER goes number 1. Generational, remember” That’s some choice words used by the defensive player for Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
If he isn’t the number 1 overall in the draft, he is certainly the number 1 defensive player available this year. But there is a challenge. The Titans pick 1st this year. The next two are Browns and Giants. And all of them either need a quarterback or O-line player, Travis Hunter. But his stats can also impress the teams who might trade up to grab him.
In 3 years with the Nittany Lions, Abdul Carter played 39 games (all starters) with 1 interception, 5 defended passes, 5 forced fumbles, 23 sacks, and 172 tackles (104 solo). He has tackled enough players to boast about his abilities. However, his position will get decided as per the team requirements. There’s a month to go. Things can change. But with more challenges coming up, everyone is focussed on moving up their stock.
