Calls Mount to Bring Back 27YO Baseman as White Sox’s Latest Trade Deal With Cubs Sparks Fan Outrage

4 min read

The Chicago White Sox have managed to rile up the fans again! This time due to their latest trade once again with the Chicago Cubs. The team got 25-year-old infielder Gage Workman from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations, while Nick Maton was designated for assignment.

But fans are not happy with this deal. They were already not thrilled with the team with ‘sell the team’ chants and slogans blasting all over their field. Plus now that this move comes after Maton’s less-than-good run with the Sox, it triggered fans.

Moreover, Workman, who made his debut with the Chicago Cubs in March, really didn’t end up lighting up the stat sheet. So Sox fans really see no point in this trade.

Prior to today’s game at the Athletics, the Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Gage Workman from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations and designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment.

Workman had given three hits, two RBIs, and six strikeouts in 15 appearances. He was designated by the Chicago White Sox just weeks ago after a brief stint. The question ringing must be – so what did the White Sox see?

Well, what caught the White Sox’s attention was Workman’s versatility on defense. He has experience playing several positions.  From shortstop to third base, second base to right field even. He is also known for his defensive skills, and he has a strong arm. So he gets the flexibility the Sox infield needs. However, fans are not thrilled with this and want a return of Tim Elko, the 27-year-old first baseman.

Elko has been making a name for himself with his power, and it’s almost like he is proving something to the White Sox. And fans are watching and asking for the team to bring Elko back.

Chicago White Sox sound off after trade

One fan made a sarcastic comment about the Sox enjoying the errors of making the decision. And well, for many fans they are left with a huge question on why exactly the Sox moved on from Maton. Yes, he has not been consistent, but he was a reliable utility player, and hence this trade has fans wanting more. They want a much-needed boost, which many feel Workman won’t be bringing.

enjoy the errors

Another user in X simply said, What! And this is a comment that has echoed throughout. This major outburst is because fans are stunned that the Sox picked up a player like Workman who was struck out six times in just 15 plate appearances, while Tim Elko is there crushing it in Triple-A with a .356 average, a 1.086 OPS, and real home run power that the Sox need.

WHAT

A sarcastic comment came, saying, Enjoy! And it is understandable because despite Workman being a defensive standout, he wasn’t a stellar player in the minors and hasn’t been consistent in the majors either. His 153 strikeouts in Double-A are red flags too. Tim Elko, meanwhile, is smashing opposite-field homers, and fans are asking, why not him?

Enjoy him

Instead of boosting the offense, the Sox picked up another utility man who hasn’t been able to stick in the crowded infield of the Cubs. So the comment saying changes everything is because while Workman may have flashed the glove, his bat hasn’t shown up. Meanwhile, Elko has a slash line of .356/.429/.658 now and has six homers this season. This is the change fans want.

this changes everything

This comment of Tatter’s is short but sharp and biting. Fans clearly are getting more affected by the fact that Elko has hammered two bombs in one night at Charlotte. Meanwhile, Workman has three MLB hits to his name. The Sox needs power, not a prophet to perfect, and Elko’s bat is screaming for attention.

The Chicago White Sox at the end of the day seriously could use some serious pop. The team is sitting in a five-way tie for the 24th in home runs this season so Elko’s bat can be a lifeline for them. Sure, there is a risk that a triple-A success doesn’t translate to the big league. But the Chicago White Sox needs to take that chance. Don’t you feel so?
