The Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets played out an entertaining matchup at the Chase Center this Sunday. A game marred by controversy and aggression, a familiar face was once again at the center of attention: Draymond Green. The 35-year-old struggled to keep his cool in a game that saw the young Rockets expertly crowd out the Dub Nation’s offence. Green himself contributed just two points, while Stephen Curry finished with one more. The Rockets held Curry to 1-of-10 shooting, thanks largely to Amen Thompson’s stellar defense. The 21-year-old, who grew up attending Curry’s camps, shined in his Chase Center return, contributing 14 points, six assists, and elite perimeter defense. However, once again, it was a moment of madness from Green that elicited reactions from all corners.
After receiving a technical foul for elbowing Rockets center Alperen Şengün in the second quarter, Green was later fouled and mocked Şengün’s previous celebration, drawing both cheers from the home crowd and sharp criticism online. A chaotic end to the first half saw Green commit multiple fouls in quick succession, including a flagrant on Şengün early in the third. Despite drawing fouls, the Rockets went just 6-of-16 from the line, which may have resulted in more concern, had it not been for the 106-96 win. The teams entered the break with Houston leading 51-50, and a subtle courtside exchange between Steph Curry and Rockets coach Ime Udoka further amped up the atmosphere.
Regardless, Green’s antics, which resulted in his 13th technical foul of the season, also led to reactions online. While he had his fair share of detractors, quite a few fans had issues with one particular comment from the Rockets’ announcer. As Green was seen taunting the referee, after which he promptly elbowed Sengun, the Rockets’ announcer was heard, claiming the following:
“Draymond knows he can’t guard Sengun to save his life?”
Of course, the 35-year-old has had consistent issues throughout his career. From his 2016 Finals suspension after hitting LeBron James to altercations last season with Rudy Gobert and Jusuf Nurkić, this latest incident adds to a long list of infractions. However, he is still a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, and fans are well aware of the kind of impact he has had on the Warriors throughout his career. That, in particular, led to a range of supporters questioning the comment on Twitter.
Fans left fuming with Rockets’ announcer amidst Draymond Green’s antics
Quite a few fans, perhaps rightly so, were left in disbelief after the comment. One user in particular thought that the aforementioned comment wasn’t the only piece of questionable coverage the Rockets’ commenters were guilty of on the night. “Did the Rockets announcer really say ‘Draymond knows he can’t guard Sengun to save his life?’” This didn’t sit well with the Warriors’ camp. Though guests, the West conference team expected neutrality from commentators. But there are always two sides to the story. So, which side do you sit?

They wrote, “Them rockets commentators were talking nothing but nonsense the whole game saying “draymond this, draymond that. Warriors don’t play real basketball.” The user went on to compare Green’s antics with those of Dillon Brooks, a player who has already registered 16 technical fouls this season, leading to a one-game suspension.
Another user was convinced the commentators had been utterly biased, writing, “Rockets announcers were smoking up when they were watching the game, such biased dipshits i must tell you.” Of course, stadium commentators do tend to support the home team, even if this time it led to questioning one of the greatest defenders of all time. However, not everyone was on the same page, as a few chose to differ with statistics. They wrote, “He shoots 48% ts while guarded by Draymond btw.” Not many will question Green’s ability to lock up players. However, another user chose the opportunity to praise the player, claiming, “Draymond is the goat of mind games.”
Of course, the mind games eventually ended with Green elbowing Sengun after taunting the referee multiple times. But through the midst of it all, even the most negative fan will agree that Green’s antics often make games more entertaining, as this fan wrote, “He makes games entertaining tho lmao.”
The loss apart, the Warriors are in a comfortable position, regardless of whether Draymond Green ends up getting another suspension. The Warriors have steadily risen in the Conference in the last few weeks, and the loss is a wake-up call to not let the strings loose. They are currently 6th in the West, within a splitting distance of the 3rd-placed Lakers, who are merely 2 games ahead. Can they breach the fort? Or will the Dub Nation cry more?
