When Caitlin Clark suffered her latest injury, he entire WNBA fanbase held their breath. With CC already missing games through prior injuries (quad and left groin), another setback meant further missed games and, at worst, a season-ending injury. However, after due testing, it seems like Caitlin has missed a serious injury. But that wasn’t the end of it…
With the Indiana Fever yet to release any definitive timeline for her return, the fans are concerned. Fever medical staff have already faced the heat for mishandling CC’s injury, and now, with a lack of clarity, they are under fire once again. But, while the fans continue to wait for any news about Caitlin’s return, the Indiana Fever have weathered the storm without their talismanic guard. Winning their last three games, they have remained in the playoff positions.
This uptick in form has been good for the entire squad. It has not only eased the tension among the fans, who were worried about falling off the curve and missing the playoffs entirely. But it has also allowed the Indiana Fever to give proper time and rest to Caitlin Clark and allowed her to heal completely. Sure, they’d love to have her back as soon as possible, but with the wins, there is no need to rush her back and risk a re-injury. According to WNBA analyst Tony East, they have also shown the league that they can beat anyone.
While speaking during an episode of the Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast, Tony East said, “In the standings, they’ve beaten New York, they’ve beaten Phoenix, they’ve beaten Seattle, they’ve beaten Atlanta, they’ve beaten Vegas, they’ve beaten Washington, they have beaten every team.” East emphasized that with the playoffs approaching, there are bound to be teams that would be a favorable or a tough matchup for the Fever. With the Golden State Valkyries as a prime example, being an expansion team and having a worse record than the Fever. Yet, the Valks have yet to lose against the Indiana Fever.
But, as per Tony East, this is exactly where the Fever wanted to be. The Fever is a team with a high ceiling with the potential to beat anyone. With a prime example of this potential coming in their win against the Phoenix Mercury. The way the seedings are right now, the Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever are set to meet in the playoffs. Beating them without even having Caitlin Clark to call upon shows that for a team like the Indiana Fever, seedings are just numbers. As long as they are in the playoffs and are healthy, they can beat anyone with the star power and supporting cast that they have.
Tony East also brought to attention the way the Indiana Fever are winning their recent games. He pointed out that, apart from Caitlin Clark’s injury, this is the team’s healthiest stretch, and the roster is paying off with wins. With Caitlin Clark due to return, the potential for the team is sky high. He said, “ I think that when she returns, I thought this last time and then she returned and got hurt right away again. But I think when she returns, they’ll have the highest baseline of successful things happening in a way that should make them very threatening with Clark on the floor.”
Caitlin Clark’s impact on the team is undeniable. With her on the floor, the Fever has a record of 8 and 5. Her mere presence on the floor makes things so much easier for the ones around her. Aliyah Boston has already spoken about how much space there is on the floor when Caitlin is playing. She explained CC’s impact, saying, “ I think when you have Caitlin on the floor, everything is automatically spaced.”

With Caitlin Clark’s incredible shooting, the defense is guarding her the moment she crosses the half-court. That leads to increased space for the rest of the team to take advantage of. They are already one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league and already have one of the best 3-point shooters, Kelsey Mitchell, in their ranks. Add to that their newest addition, Chloe Bibby, who’s yet another knockdown shooter and can’t seem to miss with the Fever jersey on ( 54.5% from beyond the arc), it’s clear to see why the analysts around the league are very high on them.
Indiana Fever Gaining Momentum With Their Fourth Straight Win
The Indiana Fever’s season has been a mixed bag so far. With the highs of winning the Commissioner’s Cup to losing games against an expansion team, their season has had it all. Even when they had Caitlin Clark available, things weren’t always easy as the team struggled to string together consecutive wins. However, things seem to be heading in a positive direction for the last few games.
After handing Paige Bueckers’ Dallas Wings their 21st loss of the season, the Fever has finally had a 4-game win streak this season. Led by Kelsey Mitchell’s 23 points and Aliyah Boston’s double-double, the Fever also had plenty of support from bench players such as Lexie Hull and new addition, Chloe Bibby. While in Caitlin Clark’s absence, Kelsey Mitchell has led the team from the front. One of the best things about these last four wins has been that there have always been plenty of contributions from the supporting cast.
Be it Aari McDonald’s 27-point explosion against the Phoenix Mercury or Natasha Howard’s 18-point and 13-rebound double-double exhibition against the Las Vegas Aces, someone or the other has stepped up. This bench support makes the Indiana Fever one of the most dangerous playoff matchups in the league. These crucial wins are also an additional bonus to Caitlin Clark’s long-term health. With no additional pressure due to Fever’s win streak, they can afford to give her plenty of time and rest to have her be ready for the playoffs.
