Caitlin Clark’s impact on the WNBA is undeniable. Even before she entered the league, her aura was enough to pull in massive crowds. Her impact during the NCAA Division I championship game between her Iowa Hawkeyes and Angel Reese’s LSU Tigers shattered viewership records. Mind you, it wasn’t a WNBA Finals or a marquee matchup between two established stars; it was a matchup between two college athletes.
When the 2024 WNBA draft lottery rolled around, every team was praying to have the chance to draft Caitlin. When the envelopes were opened, the Indiana Fever emerged as the victors of the lottery. Any doubts about whether CC’s impact would carry into the WNBA soon disappeared. With record viewership, fan engagements, and merchandise sales at an all-time high, it’s fair to say that her impact has carried forward from college basketball. The demand to watch her play was so big that the teams used to shift their games to bigger arenas when the Indiana Fever rolled around in their city.
In a lot of ways, Cailtin Clark’s impact on the WNBA has been compared to Tiger Woods’ effect on Golf. Just like Tiger Woods winning in his prime used to increase the viewership, Caitlin Clark’s presence does the same. However, while Tiger Woods’ impact was huge on golf, in terms of sheer numbers, it does not compare to the impact Caitlin Clark has on the W. According to USA Today’s Christine Brennan, the Caitlin Clark Effect is much bigger than the Tiger Woods Effect.
In her appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Christine Brennan compared the CC Effect with Tiger Woods. Speaking on the impact Caitlin’s injuries have on viewership, Brenner said, “When Caitlin Clark is injured, the first time she was injured this year, she lost, she would miss five games. During those five games when she disappeared, more than half of the viewership of the WNBA, not just the Fever, but the WNBA, more than half of the viewership, also disappeared.”
She further compared this effect to when Tiger Woods and other major athletes were absent from their sports. She said, “ Tiger Woods, I looked it up, when he was out of a major tournament or missing something, it would drop a little. Michael Jordan, when he went to baseball, dropped a little.”
A deeper look into Christine Brennan’s statement reveals a bigger picture. When Caitlin Clark has missed games, there has been a 53% decrease in Indiana Fever’s TV viewers. If we are talking about the entire league, that impact was even more, with a loss of 55% viewers. During the recently held WNBA All-Star Game, there was a 36% drop in viewership with CC missing the game. Even the ticket prices fell by 48% after it was announced that Caitlin would be missing the game.
Fans Unhappy as Indiana Fever Releases Ambiguous Caitlin Clark Update
When Caitlin Clark left the floor, holding her groin area against the Connecticut Sun, the entire basketball world held its collective breath. Was it a re-aggravation? Was it a new injury? How serious is this injury? These were some of the questions on every fan’s mind. Well, according to the Indiana Fever’s latest update on her injury, things are looking a little murky.

The Indiana Fever released a statement on July 24 saying that there is no timetable for Caitlin Clark’s return. The full statement explained that Caitlin Clark underwent various medical evaluations, which eliminated any further injury. However, there were no timelines provided for her return as her recovery and rehab will dictate her return to the basketball court.
Fever head coach Stephanie White did say that she was relieved that there is nothing else going around. She explained that since there was no extra damage, it’s just about being patient. However, basketball fans around the world were not happy with this update. To them, there were no clear updates provided. There have already been a lot of complaints from fans and analysts over the lack of clarity provided regarding Caitlin Clark’s injuries.
Even though the basketball world and no doubt the Indiana Fever are missing Caitlin Clark, the best thing right now is the prioritize her long-term health. The soft-tissue injuries that CC has faced this season are very tricky, and the only way to get rid of them is to have proper rest and complete the rehab process before she can get back on the court.
