The Browns thought they found a spark in Shedeur Sanders. The rookie quarterback who lit up every stage from OTAs to training camp. The one who guided towards a 30-10 win against the Panthers. But just weeks before kickoff, Sanders dealt another blow. During Wednesday’s joint practice with the Eagles, Kevin Stefanski confirmed the Colorado product had strained his oblique while throwing.
In a room already crowded with veteran quarterbacks, the rookie’s fate suddenly feels like a coin toss. As the sudden twist came, the Browns took the field at Lincoln Financial Field to warm up for their second preseason clash. The Eagles will be expecting Dillon Gabriel under center for the next clash. The rookie, who’d been slowed by hamstring tightness heading into Week 1, finally found his rhythm again. He was back in 11-on-11s by Aug. 11, stacking consecutive practice reps and proving the leg could hold.
But while Gabriel pushes forward, Shedeur Sanders won’t be. Cleveland is clearly not taking a risk to put him out on the field yet. And will be out for the second preseason game against Philadelphia.
