“If ever a fight was capable of inducing a snooze or nap in Times Square, this might be it.” That was Jim Lampley, calling the action on the May 2nd bout between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez. Although Haney emerged victorious by the end, his reputation took another hit, one that arguably sank lower than the embarrassment he endured after being dropped and defeated by Ryan Garcia back in April last year.
The fight itself moved at a glacial pace, with Haney circling the ring as Ramirez pursued him like a game of tag, but never succeeded. Evidently, the 26-year-old soon attracted backlash from fans and experts alike for the performance. Some argued that he was scared of the beating Garcia gave him and didn’t want to risk another loss. Boxing journalist Dan Rafael tweeted, “One of the worst fights I have seen in a long time.”
Rafael even got into an online back-and-forth with Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, who tried to defend his son relentlessly, even posting a picture of Ramirez in an ambulance, falsely claiming his son beat Ramirez so badly that he needed medical attention. It’s been several days since then, and people are slowly but surely forgetting the fight. However, Bill Haney doesn’t want to let go, as he roped in Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, and others to defend his son.
“Floyd didn’t. Sugar Ray didn’t. Oscar didn’t. Pacquiao? Canelo? Tank? Shakur? Didn’t either,” Bill Haney wrote on X earlier today. “Devin Haney at 26: 32–0, 7 world champs beat, 3 unified champs beat, Undisputed at 135, 2 division world champion.” He concluded the tweet, writing, “Chase greatness until greatness has to chase you.”

Even though Bill Haney talks about chasing greatness, he appears to be chasing a fight against someone else.
Bill wants Teofimo Lopez to fight his son, Devin Haney
Bill Haney is calling on Teofimo Lopez to step up and face his son, Devin Haney, claiming there was an “understood” agreement that Lopez would take the fight if anything fell through with Ryan Garcia. “It wasn’t in writing, but it was understood,” Bill told Boxing Scene. With Garcia’s rematch now uncertain, Haney’s team believes Lopez has no reason to avoid the matchup.

“He’s not dodging us; he’s exposing himself and exposing how good Devin is,” Bill said, accusing Lopez of targeting others like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to duck the real challenge. Bill also slammed Lopez for controversial comments, saying, “Devin told me he will beat Teofimo for all the disrespect he has uttered… to tell him every round, ‘Take it back.’”
Calling it the “ultimate grudge match,” Bill insists it’s now up to Turki Alalshikh to deliver. “If Turki can’t deliver this, then we gotta pray to God,” he declared.
That said, Bill Haney appears determined to prove the entire world wrong. It may take time to see that mission through, but what are your thoughts on his bold claims?
