Bill Chisholm Confirms Celtics’ Plans Without Jayson Tatum After NBA Alters Leadership Decision

2 min read

The Boston Celtics’ future officially shifted this week as Bill Chisholm’s investment group finalized its $6.1 billion purchase of the franchise from the Grousbeck family. But alongside the ownership transition came unexpected changes to the team’s leadership structure, and tough roster realities following Jayson Tatum’s season-ending Achilles injury.

Originally, outgoing lead governor Wyc Grousbeck was set to maintain his title until 2028 while Chisholm gradually assumed control. However, NBA rules require lead governors to hold at least a 15 percent ownership stake, a threshold Grousbeck fell below after the funding closed. As a result, Chisholm immediately steps in as lead governor, with Grousbeck now serving as alternate governor and CEO.

Chisholm downplayed the adjustment, calling it “more of a league issue” than a change in approach. “Wyc and I are arm in arm here leading the charge,” he said. Grousbeck echoed that sentiment, noting Chisholm’s willingness to prioritize stability and culture over titles.

The Celtics’ roster has undergone its own reset. In the wake of Tatum’s injury, veterans such as Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford departed as the team worked to slash nearly $300 million in salary and luxury taxes. President of basketball operations Brad Stevens guided the franchise below the punitive second apron, a move Chisholm insists positions Boston for both short- and long-term championship contention.

Despite the financial reset and Tatum’s absence, Chisholm believes in the current core of Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard, while also stressing confidence in head coach Joe Mazzulla, who recently signed a multiyear extension.

“We’re not playing for second; we’re playing for championships,” Chisholm said. “This is about leadership, talent, and building something sustainable. With this group, I believe we’ll surprise people.”

Hang tight, this is a building story….
