Big Win for LIV Golf As South African Government Shakes Hand With Scott O’Neil’s Vision Amid Massive Funding Injection

“To get a potential sponsor in South Africa and to get a tournament in South Africa, which we are still trying to do, they wanted the four of us,” Louis Oosthuizen had told Golf Monthly earlier in 2025 after Branden Grace had signed a new two-year contract with LIV Golf. Grace joined the South African team, Stinger GC, which contains Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, and Dean Burmester. And now, LIV has seemingly lived up to its goal. The Stinger GC will have an event to call their home.

In stunning and sudden news, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, revealed that discussions are very much hitting a crescendo in terms of having a LIV Golf event happen in their country. He explained that he is close to bringing LIV to South Africa in the “very near future.”

“We are very close to bringing the world’s most exciting golf tournament, @LIVGolfNation, to South Africa. 54 of the world’s top golfers will descend on South African soil in the very near future. I want to thank @stingergc_crew; we’re nearly there, boys,” he wrote on X.

If LIV Golf succeeds in getting a base in South Africa, it will be the 10th different country and fifth different continent they will be active in. It will help the global branding of the Tour, which wants the circuit to be more like Formula 1 and have a more worldwide appeal than the PGA Tour, which is mainly centered around the United States of America. For context, all of the first seven events of LIV Golf have happened in seven different countries, with three different continents involved. Even Formula 1 hasn’t found a foothold in the African continent, so this will be a huge step for Scott O’Neil and Co. in their bid to globalize the golf they have.

This is a developing story..
