Oakland A’s $67 million star is well known for his unfiltered personality. Time and again, this right-handed veteran has displayed his frustration on and off the field. From calling his own self a bad pitcher once to criticizing the New York Yankees for having only two good hitters, he doesn’t mince words. Yes, given the instances, you must have picked up that we’re referring to Luis Severino.
If you’ve been following along, you would be aware of the A’s ballpark situation. The team has been in West Sacramento as of late and playing their home games at Sutter Health Park. Severino, frustrated with the relocation, has publicly made some brutal comments amidst his trade rumors.
It is true that Sutter Health Park—the home of the Sacramento River Cats—isn’t up to the mark for a major league experience. However, nobody has been as harsh as Severino. “It’s not the same. It’s not the same atmosphere… There’s no air conditioning there, either. It’s really tough.” With his comments, he has simply drawn scrutiny from many insiders and A’s loyalists.

In the latest episode of Foul Territory, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal shared his stance on Severino’s ballpark comments. Most importantly, we all awaited A’s stance on Severino’s trade. Finally, Rosenthal shed some light. “The A’s will listen; they are not dying to get rid of him or anything like that. They understand not everyone is going to be happy with the park, but at the same time, he did sign the contract.” True, Severino did know what he was getting into.
Further, when Rosenthal was questioned if there are odds of Severino returning to his former New York teams—the Mets and Yankees—he had an interesting take. For the record, you should know that both the teams are in need of a good starting pitcher.
“He would, but the problem is he’s owed a lot of money. Two years and 20 million-plus each year, and while he has good numbers on the road this year, some of his other peripherals are not so intriguing.” On the road, Severino has a decent 3.04 ERA. However, at home, he has an alarming 6.79 ERA across 57 innings.
Rosenthal continued, “Low strikeout rate—that is a problem. Low ground ball rate—that’s a problem as well. So, how much value he has, that remains to be seen, but of course part of this will reflect on its supply and demand.” That means if, just in case, there are not a lot of good starters available in the trade market, then Severino will become appealing to other clubs.
Where can A’s star land next?
The Oakland Athletics are not desperate to ship Severino off. However, they are on board with the idea as they will be listening to the offers. Just this off-season, the A’s signed him to a massive $67 million deal. Little did we know that just in a few months his trade rumors would swirl around.
For the record, Severino has spent 8 years with the New York Yankees and one year with their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets. Now, after landing with the A’s, his peripherals haven’t been intriguing enough. Moreover, Severino’s struggles at home can’t be ignored.
He has blamed Sutter Health Park’s environment quite often. That’s when his trade speculations started to grow. He has spent a significant amount of time in the Bronx, and the idea of his return doesn’t sound bad. The Yankees could use him to fix their starting rotation. There seems to be no reason why both the parties wouldn’t like this idea.
Another option is the San Diego Padres.
He could be a good fit there. The Padres’ starting rotation is lacking three pitchers, and it’s highly likely that they would go aggressive at this trade deadline. If they do, Severino could be appealing to them. Plus, on a brighter side, Severino might like Petco Park after all. It’ll be a good change for him after all.
