In the strangest twist you will ever see, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in a rare and iconic 10-inning showdown on Monday night. Apparently, Edmundo Sosa triggered a catcher’s interference call when he intended to check his swing. However, unintentionally, his bat clipped the Red Sox catcher’s glove; the catcher didn’t back down from taking accountability for the costly mistake that contributed to the Red Sox’s loss.
To your surprise, it is only the second time in over half a century that a game has finished on a catcher’s interference. When Sosa began to swing his bat on a pitch that was way outside the strike zone, he checked his swing just to make sure. It all unfolded during the tenth inning at Citizens Bank Park. At the exact moment Sosa checked, he made quite visible contact with Carlos Narvaez’s glove. His unintended action helped the Phillies defeat the Red Sox.
After the game-ending catcher’s interference, Narvaez held a media availability where he took accountability for the loss. “I take accountability on that one. I’ve got to be better. That cannot happen again… It sucks. We don’t want to lose a game, especially in that way.” The last time a walk-off catcher’s interference determined an MLB game was in August 1971. That occurred when the Dodgers went up against the Cincinnati Reds.

“Everything went so quick, you know what I mean, like… really tough that happened in that moment. That cost us the game,” he further told the reporters. “On my mind, I was trying to, you know, I just saw the pitch kind of like going away and trying to hold it to see if we got a strikeout there.”
Narvarez’s apologetic reaction stems from the fact that this loss has dropped the Red Sox to 54-48, third in the AL East now. Moreover, they have lost three of their last four games. Before that, the team was riding high on a 10-game winning streak.
However, the Phillies were always likely to stack the winning odds in their favor. The bases were loaded, and Sosa’s unintentional action worked pretty well. Well, that was Narvaez’s side of it; now let’s hear Sosa’s point of view.
Edmundo Sosa’s unconventional way lifts Phillies to dominate the Red Sox
It’s almost funny how Sosa contributed to the Phillies’ win, not with a soaring swing, but with a kind of swing that never really made contact with the ball. To express his glee, after the game, Sosa admitted that he felt like it was a “home run,” he said via his interpreter. In a metaphorical sense, it was! It snapped a shaky stretch for the Phillies, who have lost three back-to-back series recently.
Phillies ace Zack Wheeler also admitted that the catcher’s interference walk-off win was indeed “strange.” However, Sosa’s at-bat was tough overall. Very quickly, he was trailing behind 0-2 to closer Jordan Hicks. By the fifth pitch, he signaled for a review after feeling contact with the glove. Then the umpires took over the matter and reversed the call.

Manager Rob Thomson also admitted that it’s one of those two things that he has not seen in decades. Along with this walk-off catcher’s interference, he also added the walk-off inside-the-park home run to the list. That happened back on July 8, when the Phillies lost to the Giants over a walk-off inside-the-park homer at Oracle Park. Since that was against the Phillies’ odds, Thomson admitted that this rare victory over the Red Sox felt even better.
