Angel Yin seems to have very bad luck with the Chevron Championship. Last year, she withdrew from the tournament as she experienced significant discomfort while walking the fairways. It was because she broke her left ankle while in Austria in 2023. While recovering, she took off her “air cast every night for two weeks,” and the pain resurfaced again at the first major of the season. Although now she has recovered from it, another pain has come to haunt her in her quest to win the first major.
After carding a 70 in the second round, Yin joined the press conference and revealed something surprising. When asked to sum up the week so far, the 26-year-old responded, “I would describe this week so far as me, surprisingly, being allergic to gluten. So, you know, a lot of variables, a lot of stuff to overcome. Sucks.” She dived into the details of her gluten allergy and added, “Just had three days of pasta, and that was not a good thing. Never experienced such pain in my life. Well, I have, but different.”
That’s right, even while competing on such a big stage, the golfer was starving and low on nutrients all the time. The pain and difficulties left her in tears. To this, she added, “It was just a little bit alarming because I had an early tea time Thursday, and I was awake at 3:00 a.m., crying over pain. I usually don’t like to cry, and not crocodile tears. Real tears.” However, she forced herself to sleep otherwise, things could have gone worse.
With that, she has also been surviving just on peanuts. “Then I had to try to go back to sleep for a little bit so I have some energy. Actually played my first round without eating. I had like eight M&M — peanut butter M&Ms. Kept me going. Like five peanuts, five half peanuts. Yeah, that was it,” added Angel Yin. Although the golfer is aware and says, “I’m from California, so everybody has that issue. It’s not a myth,” it has been really tough for her to compete.
Despite the setbacks, Angel Yin fired five birdies in the first round and finished with a 69. Surprisingly, she also had a decent second round. Thanks to four birdies on Friday, the golfer is currently tied for 6th. While her health certainly remains an issue, the bad weather is also there to increase the difficulty.

Back in 2023, Angel Yin finished second at the Chevron Championship. It also remains her best significant championship result alongside her T2 at the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open. Last year was a roller coaster ride for Yin as she missed seven cuts in 20 starts and even had to withdraw from the Chevron Championship. This year, though, the golf greens aren’t the only challenge for her, as health is now a significant issue. Despite that, she may win the title considering her form this season.
Angel Yin ended her winless streak this season
After joining the tour back in 2017, Yin had to wait till the 2023 Buick LPGA Shanghai to win a title. However, after that, she again went on to winless streak for two years and ended it with an incredible win at Honda LPGA Thailand in February this year. With rounds of 67-64-64-65, she shattered multiple LPGA records, finishing an incredible 28-under par, surpassing Annika Sorenstam’s 2001 LPGA record of 261.
She started this season on a strong note with a T18 finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Championship. Following that, she finished solo 10th at the Founders Cup. She carried this form to Thailand to win the title. Coming to the Chevron Championship, Angel Yin is in the top 10 despite the pain. Considering that, the stars are still looking in her favor to win this week.
