It all began when a collegiate athlete at the LSU Tigers and Reese’s fan, ZaKiyah Johnson’s PR manager, took to X (formerly Twitter) and gushed over a photograph of Angel Reese. The Chicago Sky athlete can be seen wearing a pendant on the hardwood. The picture was taken when Reese made a recent comeback against the Washington Mystics. The verified account shared the image with a caption that read, “Awww angel’s wearing his initials on her necklace.”
The initials, ‘WCJ’, apparently belong to the NBA player and Reese’s rumored boyfriend, Wendell Carter Jr. One fan account reposted the image with a light-hearted and sarcastic take. They justified the title with a caption that read, “Women can’t even wear necklaces that stand for Wisdom, Courage, and Joy anymore.”
The comment section was soon filled with sweet jokes and remarks from fans. But Reese was having none of it. She reposted the previous tweet with a caption, “right like y’all know i’m one of Gods children.”

For context, the rumors of brewing romance between Carter Junior and Angel Reese began after the two players were spotted hanging out on numerous occasions. Carter also wore an Angel Reese T-shirt, while Reese was spotted attending one of his matches. Though bold and fiery on the hardwood, Reese reposted with the intention to add a hint of coyness and sarcasm, the post backfired on the athlete. And clearly, fans were not amused, looking at her recent antics both on and off the court.

Needless to say, fans lashed out at the athlete’s spiritual post. While she wrote it in jest, most fans saw it as a disrespect to religion. A user referred to a recent off-court incident and wrote, “If you want to represent Christ, stop t-g and be humble.” A viral video had surfaced on social media where Reese can be seen dancing inappropriately alongside a famous rapper. The dance was followed by a recording of her podcast, Unapologetically Angel’s latest episode.
However, another fan angrily burst into the comment section with, “THEN WEAR A CROSS NECKLACE AND PRAY TO ROSARY.” Not giving in to the playful caption, they advised the athlete to don a Christ’s necklace instead of wrapping a pendant with the initials WCJ on it.
“Are you not blabbering too much for someone that lost by 17 a few minutes ago and on a 6 match losing run?” another fan wrote, referring to the Chicago Sky’s 103-86 loss to the Washington Mystics. While Reese made an important contribution, scoring 22 points, it wasn’t enough to take the Sky over the line, marking their sixth loss in a row.

Meanwhile, others reacted to Reese with a dash of nonchalance. Though they did not reflect on her past actions or virtually policed the athlete for not strictly adhering to the demands of the religion, such users suggested that Reese tone the sarcasm down by a few notches. “Angel for the love of God, chill,” a user wrote, echoing the shared sentiment.
And then there were very few who provided an equally witty reply. A user commented, “One of gods children but word on the court is WC Jr woman.” While the fan agreed with Reese’s spiritual comment, calling her a divine child, they also left a wink-worthy note, hinting at the star’s alleged relationship with the NBA star.
