Allen has always been special to Ann Iverson, another reason why she was worried about the golden boy. She once revealed she knew her son would play basketball the instant she saw him for the first time. The first thing she noticed about Allen was his long arms. Initially worried, but later the doctors assured her that ‘they are just long arms’ and nothing was wrong with her child. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s good for him to play ball with.’ It did come in handy,” said Ann. But Allen almost broke his mom’s heart by opting to play another sport.

Made for basketball, Allen Iverson initially fell for another ball

During his high school days, Allen gravitated more towards football, a choice her mother did not like much. As a high school basketball player herself, Ann Iverson wanted to instill a love for the game in her son. But Allen, the naturally born athlete he was, opted to play football initially. And he was great at it. He played multiple positions on the field, including running back, kick returner, and defensive back. Ann narrated a funny story, that whenever Allen got tackled on the field, she would come running down from the stands.

Ann revealed that she and Allen had made a pact where he would signal her if he was okay. “We made a little pact. He’ll get up after they tackle him. He’ll put up one finger, and he would run around. That meant, ‘Mama, sit down.’ I sat right there, I’d start clapping,” added Ann. But she was not going to give up so easily. She got an interesting idea to get Allen invested in basketball.

After the end of the football season, Allen had to do something to keep himself occupied. So Ann enrolled him in his high school basketball team. Allen initially felt that basketball was soft, compared to football, but continued with the game, much to the delight of his mother. And the rest is history. Ann went on to say, “Basketball just was my love, and I’m just really glad he chose it. I couldn’t stand going to the football games and them tackling my baby.

AI turned out to be great in both sports, leading his high school, Bethel High School, to Virginia State Championships in both. His basketball talents were later spotted by the legendary coach, John Thompson, of Georgetown University. He gave young Allen a full scholarship to play college basketball for Georgetown, which he accepted. Although he was leaving his love – football behind, he went on to become one of the most influential figures in basketball’s modern history, and now, with Malone, he shook his leg.
