Just when Alexander Volkanovski seems to have gathered his composure ahead of his featherweight title clash with Diego Lopes, the former champion has once again turned heads—but for an entirely different reason this time. In a moment that left many doing a double-take, Volkanovski channeled the spirit of Bruce Lee to deliver a cryptic yet powerful response to an offbeat question thrown his way. Curious about what he said? Let’s dive in.
While having a conversation with ESPN Aus/NZ, one of the hosts of the show asked the former featherweight champion about the nature of water: “Is water wet?” Alexander Volkanovski paused a bit before invoking his inner Bruce Lee to answer the philosophical question. “Is water wet? Yes, I mean, yes—wet is water. You know what I mean? I feel like, yeah, if you put water on something, it is wet,” said Volkanovski.
He further added, “So, water is wet. Does that make sense? So, wet—I just think it’s just water. Let’s dissect this. What do you—like, how it is—water is wet. You know what I mean? It’s like saying, you know… yeah. Does that mean water is wet? Water is wet. Alright.” Sounds similar? Well, these words are pretty similar to what Bruce Lee said in his interview on The Pierre Berton Show in 1971.
Decades after his passing, Bruce Lee’s legacy continues to echo through the world—especially in the hearts of MMA fighters. Countless UFC stars have openly expressed their admiration for the American-born Chinese martial arts icon. So when ‘The Great’ invokes Lee’s words, it’s more than just a tribute—it’s a mental reset, a way to stay grounded before stepping into the Octagon against a hungry younger challenger at UFC 314.
Interestingly, according to former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, a calm Volkanovski has what it takes to defeat Diego Lopes, “Pre, like, [Volkanovski-Makhachev 1] ‘Volk’, I think, beats Diego Lopes. Like ‘Volk’s skill set, and just his composure, his toughness, his grit, his fight IQ, his ability to fight in the Octagon is second to none, okay. He’s amazing, but again, with all the other factors we looked into– which Volk’ do we see?”
As Alexander Volkanovski chimed into Bruce Lee’s tunes, it painted a completely different picture. However, amid the hubbub, a former champion believes that ‘The Great’ will meet his end on April 13.
Henry Cejudo claims Alexander Volkanovski will bite dust at UFC 314
With two back-to-back defeats, Alexander Volkanvoski took a long break from the world of fighting after being the featherweight champion for years, and with an intention to again hold the 145 lbs gold, Volkanovski will be embracing the Octagon against up-and-coming Brazilian hotshot Diego Lopes. Many within the community want ‘The Great’ to hold the belt before hanging up his gloves, however, Henry Cejudo believes that the Aussie will face the end of his career on April 13.
While having a conversation with The Schmo, the former flyweight and bantamweight champion emphasized that Volkanovski is not the same fighter anymore, “I don’t think it’s the same Volk. I personally think Diego Lopes is gonna beat him. I really do. But if Volkanovski does get it done, he gets it done. It’s not Ilia Topuria that he’s going to [have to] beat.”
He further added, “Volkanovski has done some amazing things at 145 lbs, but he’s also gone through three losses. Against the best in the world, but that’s still three, and two out of three were knockouts. Volkanovski will eventually give you distance. You can only run for so long. [Diego’s] really good on bottom, so if Volkanovski does take him to the ground, this dude’s, his submission game is underrated.”
Diego Lopes has been putting opponents to sleep left and right, and now—in less than 750 days since his UFC debut—the Brazilian hotshot is fighting for gold. Given that, what are your thoughts on the hubbub? State your opinion in the comments below.
