After New York Rangers’ Loss, List of NHL Teams Eliminated From 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs So Far

“It’s on us. We needed to be better.” Peter Laviolette shared his thoughts when he witnessed the Rangers’ elimination. As the playoffs began and teams were eliminated, the NHL’s standings featured a stark reminder: the E beside the names of the teams who get early playoff exits. It created a strong symbol of fate for several hopeful franchises.

The curtain has officially dropped on several playoffs; many teams that once won the championship are no longer eligible. So, what went wrong? How did some of the NHL’s powerhouses waver from the playoffs? Let’s find out!

New York Rangers

“It’s disappointing for everybody. It certainly wasn’t anybody’s plan coming into the year, especially coming off of last year. Yet here we are. We had opportunities in the last 20 games to make our own voice and make our own way; we didn’t do that.” Peter Laviolette, the New York Rangers’ coach, was vocal about elimination. The 7-3 loss for the New York Rangers proved to be a devastating blow. The early dominance indicates a promising season, but they were unable to maintain momentum. With injuries and inconsistent goaltending, legacy play has collapsed.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers are all officially eliminated from playoff contention!

This is the FIRST TIME in @NHL HISTORY that all three teams have missed the playoffs in the same season! #LetsGoPens #NHLBruins #NYR https://t.co/6MTmwJGnDx

Boston Bruins

Despite beginning the season with a positive start, the Boston Bruins were unable to replicate the success of their league-best regular season in 2023-2024. They lost the game in the final stretch, resulting in an early exit. The Bruins couldn’t find their rhythm defensively or offensively. The early elimination of the President’s Trophy frontrunner left the fandom in a state of immense shock and disappointment.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Led by the iconic Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins entered the season with hopes of rekindling their playoff magic. However, even Crosby’s leadership couldn’t steer the team into postseason contention. Their playoff dreams were crushed in a deflating 8-4 season-ending loss, leaving fans heartbroken and questioning the future of a once-dominant franchise. For a team with such a storied legacy, missing the playoffs feels like more than just a loss but a moment of reckoning.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings showed early flashes of promise, hinting at a long-awaited return to playoff contention. However, their postseason hopes unraveled in the final weeks of the season. Key losses, most notably a 5-2 defeat to the Islanders, sealed their fate. Despite the growth and grit on display, Detroit fell just short. For the loyal fanbase, the wait for a playoff return continues—hopeful that the building blocks of this season lay the foundation for a stronger push next year.

San Jose Sharks

At the start of the season, San Jose showed signs of early dominance with a 4-1 victory over the Utah Hockey Club in early April. In the end-of-season game, the Sharks fell back into old habits, and Spark was not ignited enough to let them stay, resulting in a 5-2 elimination loss. Again, unreliable goaltending and a lack of snapshots plagued them throughout this year. While creating an image of brilliance, they were unable to maintain it so far because the foundation was too weak to withstand the pressure of a deep run, or any run at all.

Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks fans were familiar with this storyline; once again, the NHL’s teams missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Back in 2010, the Blackhawks were a powerhouse franchise in the NHL, but this year, the team struggled to perform well with a 3-1 loss. The team’s last true contender status was in 2020; since then, the team’s magic has somewhat faded. With a roster in transition and fans hoping for results, Chicago’s front office faces backlash in the offseason ahead.

Utah Hockey Club

The Utah Hockey Club made its debut in the season with hope, passion, and potential. The team added a surprise element to the NHL by being the freshest team with young players and the most talked-about team. They showcase sharp puck movement, a confidence to defend, and grit to challenge the elite opponents, but the chase ended with a 4-3 loss. Clayton Keller’s caption of Utah made the sharpest statement when he said, “Sometimes, it’s crazy to think about how quickly it happened and how great of a move it’s been. So just super thankful, so many people gave us a great position to be successful, and I couldn’t be more excited for next year.’’   He told them that this was just the first lesson and that many more would come.

Whether it’s the sting of missed opportunities or the flicker of future promise, one thing is certain: the NHL playoffs demand more than talent—they demand resilience, unity, and unrelenting grit. For these eliminated teams, the journey ends here, but the hunger for redemption is far from over. The 2025 chase may be done, but the spark for a comeback has only just been lit.
