The Yankees have won two games in a row, which has elevated the team’s morale. And it was visible when Aaron Judge talked to the media. The captain didn’t just give his usual injury update, but he also gave his teammate a funny warning that made everyone chuckle.
On July 22, Judge injured his right elbow while trying to throw out a runner. Later, he was put on the 10-day IL with a flexor strain. During his absence, the Yankees fell in the standings, going 4-6. When he returned on August 4, everyone hoped the picture might change, but the inconsistency continues. But winds finally began favoring the Yankees. Against the Twins on Tuesday, they not only won by 9-1, but Judge also gave a positive update.
In the post-game conversation with YES Network, Judge was asked about how his elbow feels on throws. He didn’t oversell it and simply said, “Feeling good. You know it’s been a 10 days off and throwing is a little weird and then trying to kind of ramp it back up, but you know we are feeling good. It’s progressing. It’s all on what the trainers say. Hopefully, we can get back out there soon.” Then came the punchline on his teammate, who has taken up RF in his absence, Giancarlo Stanton. He said, “I told Big G, ‘Don’t get comfortable in right field.’”
Since Judge’s injury, Stanton has been playing right field. He is 6’6″ tall and has a strong arm. And it looks like Stanton is having just as much fun as he is giving. “I try not to make them move it.” He told MLB that playing catch, taking grounders, and even tossing balls to fans were always entertaining.
He’s also doing well at the plate. His OPS is .962, and he has an average of .300, 12 home runs, 34 RBIs, and an OBP of .376. After a 60-day stint on the IL for elbow issues, he returned in mid-June and hit a 111.1-mph line drive in his first game back. Since then, he has been a spark. And in the win against the Twins, he and Aaron Judge gave a great performance. Stanton went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.
Giancarlo Stanton sparks Yankees with four hits, Aron Judge adds early blast
Then comes the Tuesday showdown, the Yankees beat the Twins easily, by 9-1 at Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge swung hard from the start, hitting a home run in the first inning, his 38th of the year. This showed that he is back to his old self after rehabbing his elbow. That hit was more than a play; it signalled the captain’s return.
Later, Stanton took charge in the middle of the game. He played right field for the fourth time this season. And this time, he hit a Statcast-projected 447-foot homer, a double, and two singles to finish the night with four hits and three runs batted in. That’s what happens when a slugger gets back into the swing of things.
Afterwards, Judge praised Stanton, saying, “He’s a leader. This guy’s been one of the best in the game for quite a long time” “It speaks volumes to his leadership and what he means to this team.” Stanton, on the other hand, stayed humble. “It’s refreshing after missing so much time, because I contribute zero when I miss time,” he said. “Anything I can do when I’m back is always nice.”
Judge’s power and Stanton’s timely bat made it worth seeing. When these two swing together, the Yankees look like a team that is ready to run. Can they continue it?
