Taylor Townsend Speaks Out on Crowd Behavior During US Open Thriller With Ben Shelton

2 min read

Remember how ATP pro and rising American star Ben Shelton and World No.1 doubles player, and his compatriot Taylor Townsend swayed the fans during their first mixed doubles stint two years ago at the US Open? That was an amazing run as the two reached the semis thanks to their exceptional chemistry and dominant on-court performance. Guess what? The duo recently returned for their second outing at the American hard court slam since 2023. As expected, the outcome was nothing less than stunning. Shelton and Townsend kicked off their campaign on a high note at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. But the WTA star had some crucial complaints to make – although there was nothing serious about them.

Shelton and Townsend’s pair won their opening R16 battle against the team of Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune. And in just 56 minutes, they ended up securing their quarterfinal ticket. In straight sets (4-2, 5-4), Townsend and Shelton beat their opponents. While the first set went easy, they had to face a thrilling ride in the next one as the result came into a tiebreak. During the post-match interview, the World No.1 women’s doubles star made an honest confession. Especially regarding the crowd present at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. No doubt they were cheering for her and the ATP star – but somehow she didn’t feel it.

Beginning her speech, Townsend initially expressed her gratitude toward the fans saying, “It’s been two since we’ve seen you guys. So thank you for coming out. We missed you guys.” And that’s when she also pointed out (hilariously), “We’re really happy to see you guys, but for our next match, we need you guys to turn up some more… because it was a little dry. So we need you guys to be louder in our next match.”
