Is Chelsea ever going to take their foot off the gas in the transfer market? In a bid to pursue greatness in the domestic world, the Blues continue to burn a hole in their pocket. Just days ago, the club secured the record signature of Naomi Girma. But it looks like the WSL side isn’t stopping as they eye another NWSL and USWNT star Sam Coffey.
The interest comes just a day before the deadline day of the January transfer window as the London-based club looks to bolster their ranks for one last time. This comes from BBC writer Emma Sanders, who reports that Chelsea have been in the market to sign a defensive midfielder for a very long time. Hence, the idea of bringing Sam Coffey to Stamford Bridge seems quite intriguing to the WSL giants.
So far, talks haven’t progressed much with Portland Thorns but Chelsea ladies have had a word with the 26-year-old American midfielder who continues to train with the NWSL side in Arizona. Of course, a transfer fee is expected from the English side even though Coffey signed a two-year contract with the NWSL side in 2022. Since then, Coffey has made quite a name for herself at the Thorns.
Aside from being named in the NWSL Best XI for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023, the holding midfielder also endured luck on the international front. She earned her first international cap for the USWNT in 2022, having made her debut against Nigeria during a friendly game. Samantha was able to cement her name in the Stars and Stripes, earning a place in Emma Hayes’ 2024 Paris Olympics roster.
That turned out to be her first-ever international achievement, having won the gold medal in France. No wonder Chelsea are keen to bring the US international to England’s domestic scene. While it remains to be seen how the deal is closed by the WSL leaders, it has made one thing clear; the NWSL is in danger!
