Mario Cristobal played college football at Miami, which is why he was such a prime target for the program. He was signed as free agent with the Denver Broncos but never got to build his NFL career. After a brief stint with NFL Europe, he switched to college football coaching in 1998, becoming a grad assistant for the Hurricanes under Butch Davis.
