Davis Thompson has been in red-hot form since 2024! The 25-year-old had an incredible 2024 season that saw him make 22 of the 25 cuts. His best performance was undoubtedly at the 2024 John Deere Classic. Thompson overcame a packed field that included major winners like Jordan Spieth and Jason Day to win the title. He also had two runner-up finishes throughout the season.
The Atlanta local is walking the path to a very prosperous career. He is definitely a very talented player. Thompson would also give credit to his golf kit which is helping him remain consistent. But another key player in Davis Thompson’s rise might just be his caddie, Joe Etter. So let’s learn more about the experienced caddie who provides his valuable input to the American golfer during tournaments.
Who is Davis Thompson’s caddie?
“If you and your caddie can’t present a score that’s accurate, you deserve to be disqualified.” wrote Joe Etter on X, February 17, 2024.
This comment was with regard to Jordan Spieth’s disappointing exit from the 2024 Genesis Invitational. There is no question that the veteran caddie has an opinion. Having been in the business for nearly 15 years according to his The Caddie Network profile, Thompson has earned his batch to be critical of golfers and caddies alike. Even if it’s against an established and famous player like Spieth.
Coming from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Joe Etter graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1999. But he had fallen in love with the sport long before that. His fondest memory in the sport is Tiger Woods‘s 1997 Masters Tournament win. Although it would be a bit biased considering his favorite golfer is also the GOAT. Nevertheless, there is no question that Etter has followed golf for nearly 3 decades. Half of the time, he has also worked as a professional caddie.
During this time, Joe Etter has partnered with a number of players. His illustrious list of bosses includes Chris Kirk, Harris English, Scott Langley, and now, the rising star; Davis Thompson. Etter saw him dominate the Tour throughout the year. He started his career as a caddie accompanying Chris Kirk during the latter’s run in 2011. Joe Etter had also caddied for Patton Kizzire when the latter had won 2 PGA Tour titles.
However, his favorite moment as a caddie is the time his boss Scott Langley got a clubhouse lead in the final round of the 2014 Valspar Tournament. Langley led the table after finishing his 72 holes and could have won the tournament if not for John Senden’s last-9 roller-coaster.
As a caddie, he prefers the TPC River Highlands but his choice of course to play on is the Ocean Forest at Sea Island, Georgia. However, unlike most caddies who transition from playing golf, Etter has never been eager to be a professional player. He has been committed to being a caddie throughout his life. Etter’s profile indicates that his dream fourball would be with his dad, Tiger Woods, and New York Jets‘s legendary QB; Aaron Rodgers.

This was everything we learned about Joe Etter’s journey in golf. Let’s take a look at his life beyond the course.
Joe Etter away from the greens
No, we’re not going to reflect on Joe Etter missing the green. Instead, we will reflect on his life outside of golf. Etter also loves to cycle and play tennis in his free time. But he is truly passionate about the NFL. While his Instagram profile is inaccessible, the caddie still has a very active X account. And a quick glance at his page confirms that Etter doesn’t shy away from sharing his opinion. And his comments aren’t limited to golf. In fact, despite his professional inclinations, Etter can often be seen criticizing or acknowledging NFL players and teams. This just goes to show how much he loves football. His favorite team is the Green Bay Packers and based on his dream fourball, Aaron Rodgers seems to be his favorite player.
On things not related to sports, Etter’s The Caddie Network profile gives us a glimpse at his preferences. His favorite dish is sushi and he enjoys a cold beer every now and then. The caddie loves Delaney’s Bistro and Bubba Garcia’s bar on St. Simons Island in Georgia. Etter’s favorite movie is the hilarious crime comedy from 1998, The Big Lebowski. And that’s a wrap!
