Gabby Thomas Joins Sha’Carri Richardson in Disappointing USATF Nationals Blow for Team USA

When Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson withdrew from the 100m race, fans were left disheartened. Lyles, after winning his opening heat, opted out to focus on his 200m campaign, while Richardson exited the event following her recent arrest. Now, adding to the disappointment, Gabby Thomas has also pulled out of the 100m showdown, leaving the sprint derby without its brightest stars.

Taking to X, Track-and-field journalist Serenity Douglas stated that the 200m Olympic gold medalist will not be participating in her 100m race, “Gabby Thomas is no longer listed for the 100m semi-finals, but she’s still set for the 200m that will be run on Sunday.” Like Lyles, she will be focusing on her 200m sprint despite having an amazing record at the 100m sprint.

So, why such a deviation? Well, at a stacked meet like the USATF Championships, which includes multiple rounds across various sprint events, the schedule can lead to increased exhaustion among athletes. Dropping out of the 100m race may have freed Gabby Thomas from that commitment, giving her more time for preparation, recovery, and refining her race strategy—ultimately setting her up for a stronger performance in the 200m.
