Sophie Cunningham Snubs Indiana Fever Criticism With Massive Praise for Owner Herb Simon

The 2024 WNBA lottery results made it clear that the Indiana Fever franchise would never be the same again. After struggling for the best part of the last decade, getting to draft Caitlin Clark was a worthy reward for all the struggles. And what a reward Caitlin Clark’s arrival has been. Not only for the Indiana Fever, but also for the rest of the league.

Breaking all sorts of viewership, engagement, and merchandise sales records, Caitlin Clark’s popularity has taken the league to the next level. While her play has helped her teammates be the best version of themselves, her popularity has also helped them a lot. Take Sophie Cunningham as an example. Coaches and analysts always considered her a valuable role player. However, one instance of her protecting Caitlin Clark led to her jersey being sold out. This viral moment against the Connecticut Sun also led to an endorsement deal for her.

While CC’s impact has led to many positive things for the franchise and the league, there has been some criticism of the league for not taking the full advantage of this growth. Fans and players have criticized both the delayed CBA negotiations and the league’s officiating. Some have even pointed towards the team owners for not supporting their players. However, according to Sophie Cunningham, Indiana Fever owner, Herb Simon, is not one of those owners.

Speaking during an interview with The Female Quotient, Cunningham praised the Fever owner, Herb Simon, for his support and investment in them. Talking about the Indiana Fever’s upcoming practice facility, Sophie said, “ I saw the blueprint about a month ago of what they’re building for us, and it is hands down probably going to be the best, one of the best practice facilities in the whole world, men or women. Like, it is insane. And so you got to thank the Simons and everyone. All our other owners who are really investing in female athletes because it’s well deserved and it’s needed.

The Indiana Fever announced its plans to build a new training facility. Slated to start operating before the 2027 WNBA season, this facility included plans for two regulation-size courts, a strength and conditioning area, a full-service kitchen, a hair and nail salon, and a childcare space. There is also going to be a substantial massage facility, which, as per Sophie Cunningham, she is going to use a lot. With an estimated cost of $78 million, this facility is proof of the Fever ownership group’s trust and investment in players.

Indiana Fever Face Criticism For the Handling of Caitlin Clark’s Injury

Despite all the positives that Sophie Cunningham said about the Indiana Fever, they have not been immune to criticism. Much of it has been for the handling of Caitlin Clark’s injuries. CC has already suffered four injuries in the first half of the season, and fans have called out the Fever franchise for not allowing her enough recovery time. After she sustained her most recent groin injury, fans criticized the medical staff for failing to confirm she had fully recovered.

There is also some growing frustration from fans about the lack of transparency. The team has rarely provided updates about Caitlin Clark’s injuries, frustrating fans with the lack of clarity. Even when there is an update, rather than exact severity, there are vague statements about her injuries. This does not give the fans or the analysts enough clarity regarding her return to play.

There is also criticism for not being vocal enough against the physicality. Though her teammates and coach Stephanie White have repeatedly called out the league. There has been no change in the physicality CC has to suffer every possession. This has led to fans’ frustrations about the team not doing enough to pressure the league.

Sophie Cunningham’s comments show the Fever ownership’s investment in the team. Yet, there is also a sense of unease amongst the fans regarding Caitlin Clark’s repetitive injuries. Sure, the team has managed to hang around the playoff picture in her absence. There’s no doubt that they need Caitlin Clark to make a deep playoff run.
