As the Dodgers are battling the White Sox in the second game of their series, all eyes are on the scoreboard, which shows Los Angeles winning by 5-4. But over and above anything, another bombshell just struck. As the Dodgers are fighting to stay atop the NL West, they’ve been hit with a setback: An injury to the $24 million slugger Max Muncy. Judging by the footage, it doesn’t look good. So, what’s the story?
Well, Muncy had a dodgy moment during the ongoing game against the White Sox. In the sixth inning, he got hurt while tagging out Michael A. Taylor, who was caught stealing on a throw from catcher Will Smith. As per the footage shared by Talkin’ Baseball, after making the tag for the second out, Muncy went down flat on his back and was visibly in pain.

While a Dodgers trainer rushed out to check on Muncy, even a White Sox trainer came over to help Taylor, who ended up with a bruised left trapezius. However, for Muncy, things looked pretty bad as he had to be helped off the field. He could barely put any weight on his left leg.
Now, when the league is entering its second half, it couldn’t be any worse for the Dodgers to have their elite slugger getting injured at this point. Recently, Muncy had been showing signs of turning things around after a rough start. His recent upsurge led him to Phase 2 of the All-Star voting before he narrowly missed out to Manny Machado for the NL third base spot.
But just when it seemed he was getting back in his groove, he had this injury scare. Talk about bad timing.
Notably, what was supposed to be the historical night for Clayton Kershaw went for a bit of a toss as well. While Kershaw reached the historical 3000 Ks later, and his milestone was acknowledged by a standing ovation, the stands were not as active as earlier. And it was understandable because the fans were a bit upset. Muncy’s injury further added to the Dodgers’ woes.
The Dodgers’ long list of injuries
When it comes to injuries, it has been one step forward and two steps back for the Dodgers this season. And Max Muncy’s injury has just made things worse.
The Dodgers will bear the brunt of the injuries more than any other team, because they are almost certain to make it to the playoffs. They are anyway not going hard with Shohei Ohtani’s pitching because he is preserved for the postseason. With so many injuries, the team might be deprived of a full-strength line-up in the postseason.
From Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki, to Tyler Glasnow, the vital cogs of the Dodgers’ pitching are already on the sidelines. Their offense is what has kept the team running. Now, after Tony Gonsolin, if Max Muncy gets sidelined, even the offensive line-up will suffer.
As of now, we are awaiting an official team update about Muncy. If he remains out for an extended time, it leaves a huge gap at third base and in the middle of the order as well. With the trade deadline approaching, the front office might be forced to get more aggressive than planned.
Patching injuries midseason is never a recipe for postseason success. If the injuries don’t stop piling up, October might arrive with the Dodgers running on fumes.
