Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava Curse Strikes as 6296-Yd QB Snubs Josh Heupel for SEC Rivals

3 min read

Josh Heupel wastes no time when it comes to identifying top quarterback talent — just ask Nico Iamaleava, his prized 2023 commit. But that same year in March, he made a push for a fast-rising Arkansas high school QB, who would fast-forward become one of the top prospects of his class. Yet despite Heupel’s early offer, the elite playmaker who threw more touchdowns than incompletions this past season isn’t Knoxville-bound. Instead, he’s favoring SEC rivals. Could it have been Tennessee’s offensive woes and Iamaleava’s rocky 2024 season that scared off this 2026 class generational prospect?

Kane Archer has been on Tennessee’s radar for quite some time. But now, it’s the SEC competition that’s making a firm push. Hayes Fawcett dropped an update on Instagram on February 12 on Archer’s top schools. “Four-star QB Kane Archer is down to 7️⃣ schools, he tells me for @on3recruits. The 6’1 207 QB from Greenwood, AR is ranked as a Top 10 QB in the ‘26 Class.” His top inclinations include SEC schools Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Missouri and other conference schools SMU, Louisville, UCF, and Appalachian State.

Make no mistake, Kane Archer is a precision playmaker. He never lost a high school start, going 26-0 as a starter. But what’s more mind-blowing is that the Greenwood AR standout passed for 6,297 yards and 90 touchdowns while adding 1,454 yards and 26 TDs on the ground in his last two seasons. This past season alone, he passed for 3,880 yards, completing 82.5% of his passes with 57 touchdowns to just two interceptions. The performance earned him Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year.

And that’s not all — Kane Archer also led the Bulldogs to two state championships where he won the MVP honors in both, winning 26 games in a row. No wonder he’s On3’s top 10 QB and the No. 151 overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. It’s not surprising he received several offers from influential schools aside from the seven schools in his shortlist. Besides Tennessee, he also received offers from multiple other programs like Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arizona, and more. A game changer like him could bring immediate transformation to any school but did Nico Iamaleava’s fate in Tennessee subdue his interest?

Nico Iamaleava’s plight in 2024

Tennessee’s 2024 offense wasn’t exactly a QB’s dream. Nico Iamaleava displayed flashes of brilliance but was also smashed behind a weak offensive line that surrendered 30 sacks. His supporting cast? Not a single ALL-SEC first, second, or third-team receiver or tight end behind him. He was able to rack up only 2,616 yards and 19 TDs falling short of national appraisal.

The Vols may have advanced to their first 12-team playoff appearance with their 10-3 finish. But their success had more to do with their defense than a high-powered offense. So, is that what kept Kane Archer away? Watching Iamaleava fight for survival? If you’re a QB watching from afar, do you see a QB-friendly system or a tale of caution?

Maybe it’s bad luck. Maybe it’s a curse. Either way, Tennessee just missed out on another elite arm and Josh Heupel now has to find another game-changer to lead the Vols into the future.
