Diamondbacks Receive Brutal Injury Update on $111M Star in Major Blow to Playoff Hopes

4 min read

The Arizona Diamondbacks fought through a wave of injuries earlier this month. But after losing Corbin Burnes, Justin Martinez, and A.J. Puk to elbow injuries and Gabriel Moreno to a fractured finger, they have now suffered another significant blow. After Monday night’s 10-0 win against the Chicago White Sox, the manager, Torey Lovullo, dropped a brutal injury update on the team’s $111 million star.

D-backs’ right fielder, Corbin Carroll, has suffered a fracture on his left wrist. He will now be placed on a 15 day injured list. On June 18, against the Toronto Blue Jays, Carroll was hit by a pitch on his wrist by a 91.4 mph sinker from Justin Bruihl. Right away, he was taken for X-rays that later came out clean. However, lingering pain and no signs of recovery prompted the next imaging.

After an MRI and a CT scan on June 23, Lovullo revealed that it’s a chip fracture. “That’s a little bit confusing to all of us,” the skipper said. “It’s on the back of his hand; the impact of the ball hit the side of his hand. It just goes to show you how hard these guys are throwing today,” he further added.

The Diamondbacks stated that now Carroll will be sent to Arizona for further consultation with a specialist. To offer you all a tiny silver lining, GM Mike Hazen described Carroll’s injury as a nondisplaced fracture.

In other words, Carroll’s bone is still aligned despite the break. “It sounds like it’s relatively stable so it just needs to heal and we’ll see how it is to tolerate after that,” Hazen said. He further expressed the uncertainty around the downtime. Perhaps, that will be reassessed after a few weeks.

Across 72 games this season, the young outfielder slashed .255/.341/.573 with 20 home runs. His offensive production was something that placed him among the top outfielders in the NL. He was vital for the team’s playoff hopes.

After Carroll’s exit, outfielder Jake McCarthy might be called up from Triple-A Reno. But, in the meantime, let’s hear it from the man himself.

Corbin Carroll opened up about his injury before Diamondbacks placed him on IL

The Arizona Diamondbacks were hopeful when Corbin Carroll‘s initial X-rays came clean. He missed the series against the Colorado Rockies; however, the team was still optimistic about his return. In fact, manager Lovullo even mentioned to the media that Carroll was available off the bench before the weekend’s game.

Not just Luvollo, Carroll himself was optimistic too. “You try and play and get treatment, and hopefully it feels better after a day or two. As it didn’t, it became apparent that maybe a few more tests were needed. Got those done; it’s just unfortunate.” He even revealed he was ready to pinch-run or handle defense if the team required. However, the pain lingered.

“I don’t have too great of an understanding of what it is. I know it hurts,” Carroll expressed. “Hoping for a shorter-term [IL stint]. I’ve never experienced a bone break before, so I’m still just gathering information.”

But just a few hours after the Diamondbacks notched the 10-0 win against the White Sox on Monday, Carroll’s IL placement was confirmed. Now, with just weeks left for the trade deadline, the Diamondbacks have to play well and keep their playoff hopes alive. That’s the only way to convince the front office to buy at this deadline. Or at least not sell.

Losing Carroll couldn’t have come at a worse time, that’s for sure.
