Nothing seems to be going right for San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle. On the field, the 6-foot-11 right-hander is enduring a rough patch, struggling to find consistency with a 4.66 ERA. But it’s what’s happening off the field that has truly shaken his world. Hjelle finds himself at the center of serious allegations, accused of domestic abuse by his wife.
On Friday, Caroline Hjelle shared a TikTok of the couple’s two children with a caption that said: “When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after this once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone.” While she also abstained from revealing any further, it was since then all clear that things were not well in the Hjelle family.
Now, with MLB reportedly launching an investigation into the matter, the controversy has cast a dark shadow over his career. As the story unfolds, Hjelle has finally broken his silence, offering his side amid growing scrutiny.
“I feel confident in saying that I will have one eventually,” NBCSports quoted Hjelle, following the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Red Sox. “I don’t have an exact timeline on that, but I would like to actually get with the people that are handling the situation with me and for me before I make an actual statement.”
Hjelle responded on the matter for the first time on Saturday, saying he’s holding off on saying too much until he has more clarity. He also mentioned that he and his wife have been separated for a while and have actually been going through a divorce for about a year now, though legal and clerical delays have dragged things out. So, while he didn’t directly deny the allegations, he didn’t support them either. So, he’s essentially staying neutral for now.
The Giants also cleared their stance on the matter.
“We are aware of these serious allegations,” the team said. “We have been in contact with MLB. These types of allegations fall under their jurisdiction, and we won’t be commenting further.” So, the team is coordinating with MLB over the allegation, and as Hjelle shared about his consultation with lawyers, things certainly will get more complicated.
