How many times can one pick themselves up and rebuild? Well, Mikaela Shiffrin has set an example by doing it again and again. Right at the start of 2024, she had a major crash that kept her in rehab through the first half of 2024. Unfortunately, with the Killington crash on November 30, her comeback season also ended in the same fate. But only when we thought things had gotten better, another crushing update has now dropped! And fans are crestfallen but are praying for her.
Mikaela Shiffrin’s still suffering from the aftermath of her crash in Killington. After all, it had punctured her in the side, leaving her unable to rise out of a chair till a few weeks back. Imagine, laughing to sneezing were a curse too. But she made a comeback on Jan. 30, although the 10th spot in Courchevel’s night slalom was far from a win. There onwards, we hoped that things would get better but Mikaela Shiffrin’s still suffering from PTSD after that crash. And that’s foiled her big World Championship plans.
Yes, Mikaela Shiffrin updated the world on February 9 that because of the PTSD from the crash, she simply was experiencing fear instead of joy during Giant Slalom trainings. And that’s led her to withdraw from this week’s giant slalom race at the FIS World Championships at Saalbach, Austria. Even though she’s the defending champ there and no matter the efforts, the truth of the matter is, “The long-story-short is…I’m not there. Right now, I feel quite far away. I’m currently working through some mental obstacles in order to return to the GS start with the intensity required for racing.”
Well, this has left fans heartbroken. No World Champs GS for Shiffrin and that’s not what they had expected. Yet, the maturity they’ve shown? It’ll leave you stunned. One of the fans reacted with, “Praying for u Ski racing can be terrifying Trauma takes time U r still simply, the best.” When Shiffrin says her fear pf the event has been ‘soul crushing,’ fans get the intensity of the situation and they are clearly pouring in to support her. Supporters through thick and thin right?
