Anything and everything around the Dallas Mavericks made it to the headlines over the last few days. Well, we all know why. No team in the history of the NBA has tried to trade their 25-year-old generational talent. Yes, if you’re late to party, the Mavs traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. Some may compare Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal’s trade to this, but those legends were well past their prime at that time. Here, the Slovenian is yet to reach his prime.
You must be wondering why I am talking about the Luka Doncic trade instead of Sivan Ochshorn. Bear with me, I’m setting up the story for you!
Okay, back to the trade. Of course, the fans were angry at the decision-makers. Unfortunately, it was directed at one person, the Mavericks GM Nico Harrison. The 52-year-old pulled the plug without any hesitation. Speaking to the media, Harrison reasoned Luka’s conditioning and the supermax contract situation as the major reason behind the trade. Above all, he also added, “Time will tell if I’m right,” leaving the fans to judge his decision.
While the GM continued to take the heat for the controversial decision, the Mavs owner jumped into the fire. No, I am not talking about Mark Cuban. The 66-year-old has been associated with the team since 2000 and he still is but as a minority owner. In December 2024, he sold the ownership to Adelsons’ family and holding 27% of ownership. We are talking about multi-billionaires here. Adelsons are none other than the owners of the Las Vegas Sands casino company.
Now you might get an idea of what I am talking about. You must have seen Patrick Dumont, COO of Sands, standing on the 2024 Western Conference Championship podium. Yes, Dumont, one of the sons-in-law of Adelsons’, is the Mavericks Governor. Here is what he said about the Luka Doncic trade, “If you look at the greats in the league, Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Shaq — they worked really hard, every day, with a singular focus to win… And, if you don’t have that, you shouldn’t be part of the Dallas Mavericks.” Well, that’s a bold thing to say. With that let’s move right into the business.
Who is the wife of Dallas Mavericks’ owner Patrick Dumont? What’s her relationship with Miriam Adelson?
Y’all would have heard about Miriam Adelson, right? The fifth richest woman on the planet, the widow of Sheldon Adelson. So, that’s how Patrick Dumont is related to the Adelson family, he married Sivan Ochshorn, Miriam’s daughter from her previous marriage. Dumont married Sivan in 2009 and went on to become a principal financial advisor of the Adelson empire.

Sivan Adelson Dumont runs an Israeli newspaper called Israel Hayom, one of the fragments of the Sands Casino Mogul. Israeli Hayom which is one of the leading newspapers in the world primarily catering to the Israel settlements in the Middle East. According to Fortune, this free daily has a strong right-wing leaning and “stridently” supportive of Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu.
It’s a shared political leaning that she picked up from her mother, Miriam Adelson. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Adelsons Family Foundation supports the cause of Holocaust and anti-Semitism awareness; advocacy and defense of Israel; Jewish and Zionist identity and education; and Israel studies on college campuses. Now that we know a bit about Sivan Ochshorn, let’s move on to her mother, the matriarch of the empire, to know more about the family.
The story of Miriam Adelson
One of the richest and most powerful women in the world was born in Israel to Polish refugees in 1945, three years before the country was officially formed. She pursued in the medical field and became a Physician before beginning her journey to America. Upon reaching the States, Miriam continued her work and training as a substance abuse treatment specialist at New York’s Rockefeller University.
Years later, she met Sheldon Adelson on a blind date and the couple got married in 1991. It was around the same time when Sheldon had purchased the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas which ultimately went on to become the base of the billion-dollar empire. Moreover, she rose to fame because of her support of the Republican Party.
In 2012, she made her debut presence at the campaign finance stage, supporting the Republican presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich, and also donated $5 million. Speaking to the Fortune magazine at the time, she said, “We are in full agreement on the causes we support, whether they are helpless people, drug addicts or young people looking for roots in Israel. We don’t have arguments or long discussions; it’s quite a fast discussion bearing in mind our common values.”
Later in 2016, Miriam along with her husband donated $10 million to Donald Trump in his race to the White House. Moreover, in 2018, then-POTUS presented the Medal of Freedom for her work as a committed doctor, philanthropist, and humanitarian.
Now that, we have gone deep into the Adelson family, let’s take a detour to the Mavericks situation. After making a controversial statement about Luka Doncic‘s exit, Patrick Dumont had something more to say.
Addressing the fans’ sorrow over the star’s departure, he wrote, “I clearly understand that, and I really appreciate that … I’m a big Luka fan. My family are big Luka fans. I have a really deep appreciation for what he brought to this team, what he brought to Dallas, and the excitement he brings. He’s an electrifying player.” Yet, it doesn’t mean that Luka was coming back to the Mavericks.
