“Steph Curry is the reason I play basketball. Steph Curry is my guy. I’m kind of like the security for the superstar,” said Andre Iguodala back in 2019. 6 years later, that level of respect that the former player holds for the veteran has not gone away. Though he may no longer be with the Golden State Warriors, Iguodala continues holding Curry in high regard. This is the same person who could not leave out Curry when discussing his jersey retirement, stating, “without Stephen Curry, nobody’s jersey is going in the rafters”. Some might say that he is the biggest Curry fan there is. However, if a fan account is to be believed, then Iguodala might soon get dethroned from that position.
‘Filho do Stephen Curry’, a Portuguese fan account of the NBA’s All-Time 3-point leader, recently put out a post. It featured a picture of Jimmy Butler, who is currently vacationing in Tuscany, Italy, along with attending J Balvin’s 40th birthday bash. Several other renowned personalities, like actress Sofia Vergara, were also at the bash, and Butler later got to hang out with footballer Mbappe. Despite all this, the thing that caught the most attention of the fan account user was Butler wearing a green tracksuit, with 30 written on the jacket, and the track pants. Even in Italy, Butler cannot seem to get Stephen Curry out of his mind.
This led to the fan account user to write “Jogou nem uma temporada inteira com Stephen Curry e já virou o maior fã do 30. Cuidado Iguodala seu cargo está em risco”. It literally translates to, “He didn’t even play a whole season with Stephen Curry and he’s already become the 30’s biggest fan. Watch out Iguodala, your job is at risk.” Yikes!

When Jimmy Butler was acquired by the Golden State Warriors back in February, Stephen Curry was reported to be among those who were on the fence. For one thing, the player had reportedly asked the front office not to engage in any ‘desperate trade’. This meant that he did not want to get a star veteran at the expense of the team’s younger squad. On top of that, as revealed by The Athletic‘s Anthony Slater, Curry was reluctant about adding Butler because he was protective of what he and the team had built. Curry himself told Slater, “With any deal, you question it. Even when KD (Kevin Durant) came, it was like, you don’t know what it’s going to look like”.
However, once Butler was with the team, one had to make the best of the situation. As it turned out, having Butler with the Bay Area franchise became less of a nuisance and much, much more of a gift.
After Butler began playing for the Warriors, the team’s win record drastically improved. The 17.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists he averaged throughout 30 games brought in a much-needed assistance on the offensive front, especially with Jonathan Kuminga being absent from the lineup due to an ankle injury. Lo and behold, the Warriors went from the 11th seed to qualifying for the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Stephen Curry understood Butler’s contribution in raising the Warriors’ status.
After the Game 1 win against the Houston Rockets, he said, “He’s carried teams to the Finals. And the idea of what he brings to us is another guy that’s just comfortable with the ball in his hands to create for himself and for others, no matter what the situation is. He is a legitimate ball handler where we can give it to him in space on the post or at the elbow, wherever, and teams have to respect him. So if I can space and give him room and keep the defense honest, that helps. And we’ve had really good chemistry since he’s been here”.
Good chemistry. That is the key term. In just a short while, Butler and Curry have become more than teammates. From calling Curry ‘Batman’ to dropping posts in appreciation of the 3-point leader, Butler keeps building up his friendship with him. This would have certainly been enough to make Andre Iguodala a bit jealous. If it didn’t, then maybe the fact that Jimmy Butler is being considered similar to Iguodala might invoke those feelings.
Steve Kerr compared Jimmy Butler to Andre Iguodala in praise: “incredible basketball IQ”
The Golden State Warriors took a major 2-1 series lead over the Houston Rockets during their playoff series back in late April. What made the feat more interesting was that the team was able to do so without Jimmy Butler. The player had missed the game after taking a hard fall in Game 2, with his injury being later diagnosed as a deep glute muscle contusion. Despite that, Jimmy Butler was on the bench, both watching and guiding his players during the game. That move earned him the respect of Steve Kerr, which led him to discuss the veteran even when he didn’t play.
“First, he had a fantastic coat on,” Steve Kerr joked. “He’s just so smart. He reminds me so much of Andre Iguodala, incredible basketball IQ and the ability to communicate what he’s seeing to see his teammates from the bench, I thought Jimmy was really important for us in that regard. He was talking to guys throughout the game.”
Basketball IQ was certainly one reason for reportedly bringing in Butler. After all, along with 13 years’ worth of experience, the veteran had also made several deep playoff runs throughout his career. The official account of the NBA describes Andre Iguodala as someone whose “selflessness, versatility, and basketball IQ set the tone for a Warriors run of four championships and six trips to the NBA Finals”. At the same time, Butler was known for being an ‘over communicator’ during the recent Warriors run.

This means that he often comes up with some plans and plays that the Warriors squad could utilize. Draymond Green was someone who appreciated this, as he once said that “The things that he’s doing like, when I tell you, to me, it’s music to my ears”.
With Jimmy Butler already at their side, no one from the Warriors squad, especially Stephen Curry, would be missing Andre Iguodala. Therefore, if the former player wants to remain as ‘Steph Curry’s biggest fan’, he might have to start taking some drastic steps.
