The 49ers locked Brock Purdy in with a five-year extension worth $45 million per season. That’s a hefty $265 million extension. But this wasn’t just about securing the bag. In fact, Purdy made it clear: his contract talks came with strings attached, ones tied to the bigger picture inside the building. “It’s not just for me to get all the money,” Purdy said. “But also like, hey, let’s surround yourself with a great team and players and a great locker room and all those things mattered.”
He’s not wrong to think that way. Roster churn with key departures, new pieces, and the constant balancing act of keeping a contender intact have defined San Francisco’s offseason. So Purdy leaned in, making it clear what he expects from the coaching staff. Not the “keep doing what we’re doing” kind of tone. This was reflective, blunt, and very specific. “For me, it’s going back to the fundamentals,” Purdy said. “I went back and watched some rookie tape with Kyle Shanahan, our OC Kubiak, and Mick Lombardi… how just automatic I was with my feet and my eyes and getting the ball out on time.”
He’s pushing to get back to that. Not just sharpening mechanics but simplifying the scheme. “Last year… I wasn’t on top of it like I could have been,” he admitted. He’s asking Shanahan to help strip the clutter and re-emphasize the foundation. That’s a significant shift in tone. Purdy is also nudging Kyle to meet him halfway.

He isn’t lobbying for new weapons or begging for system overhauls. He’s asking for clarity. For consistency. For more of the 2022 version of him—quick-triggered, decisive, clean. “I gotta get back to the basics,” he said. “And be real that, hey, I gotta get better in certain areas.” The implication? Shanahan and the coaching staff have to help build that framework—again.
It comes at a time when external evaluations aren’t exactly glowing. Pro Football Focus recently ranked Purdy 11th among NFL quarterback. Surely, not bad, but not elite either. He dropped from a 113 passer rating in 2023 to 96.1 last season. Touchdowns dipped. Picks ticked up. His success rate still led the league, but efficiency without dominance leaves a gray area. He’s aware of it. The staff’s aware of it. Now both sides are working to close that gap.
So this offseason, the extension wasn’t the end of a chapter. It might’ve been the start of a louder one. But for Purdy to live up to that big money hype, there has to some sort of expectations from fans that they would have to meet to justify it. Because if not, then, the Faithful might start losing faith on you. And that’s not a good look with that kinda bag.
